Hi there,

I have been getting really bored of my PS3 lately and have a mid range 2010 MBP so don't really know how well that will handle games on Windows with bootcamp. Does anyone know?

So was looking at getting a decentish laptop for some CS etc, maybe bf3 if it could run it half decently.

It wouldn't be for anything major like video editing etc etc just a bit of light gaming now and again.

Budget isn't big, talking about £500 absolute top, ideally closer to the £400 mark and have looked around at ASUS/ACER laptops and it seems to be about the £550-600 mark before the specs start to look tasty.

Anyone got any ideas? Or any reports on how well my MBP would cope? As all I would on that would be to up the ram to 8GB and buy a copy of Windows.

What's the spec of the mid range 2010 MBP?

It's a 2.53GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB ram, 500GB hard drive with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256MB of GDDR3 memory

Running Lion. I would also upgrade the ram for 8GB if I went down this route

Most probably going to have to look second hand or be super lucky on the Dell Outlet site.

Gaming laptops usually come in at around £600 "/

You could download a version of Windows 7 and use the trial and see how it works (google windows 7 iso). I have no knowledge of Macs running windows I'm afraid

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 5560G. It has a Radeon HD 7670M as well as onboard graphics, which are used in a crossfire configuration. 4GB ram and 500GB hard drive.

Only downside is the cpu, which is an AMD quad core. I can't say where I purchased it, but a quick google search of the model code (NX.RUREK.001) will bring up some results, and the place I purchased from may or may not be the third from top. I paid £378 for it brand new.

This is a great laptop for the price. Drop in a 120/128GB SSD, overclock the CPU (should do 2.2-2.3Ghz on all four cores) and you will be set.

I am sorely tempted by one of these for my wife (L4D / Minecraft nut).

As ^ said, those AMD CPU's can be overclocked like crazy and will help get lots of extra power out of your laptops

Theyre good little machines them!

Hi, I'm in a similar position for myself so figured I'd hijack this thread rather than start a new one. Been a while since I have gamed and never really gone for the laptop option but looking to do some light gaming and looking for a lappy for under 400 quid. Probably want to play things like Football Manager, maybe a bit of WoW if it can handle it, also was always partial to the total war games so if it can handle that sorta stuff too then great - none of it has to be on max detail or anything.

The laptop above looks great, but not knowing how things compare any more I thought I'd post up an alternative that I found, wonder how it compares. Comes in at just under £400.

HP Pavilion G6 Laptop
SPECS:
Processor: AMD Quad-Core A8-3520M (1.6 GHz up to 2.5 GHz with AMD Turbo Core, 4 MB L2 cache)
Operating System: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64
RAM: 6 GB (1 x 2 GB, 1 x 4 GB)
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 6620G + 7450M Dual GPU (1 GB DDR3 dedicated)
Screen type: 15.6" HD LED BrightView (1366 x 768)
Hard drive: 750 GB
Optical disk drive: SuperMulti DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support
Memory card reader: Multi-Format Digital Media Card Reader
TV Output: VGA + HDMI
Sound: Altec Lansing Speakers
USB 2.0 x 3
Size: W 374 x D 245 mm
Thickness: 36.3 mm
Weight 2.55 kg

I guess the only other thing is if it is worth waiting, ie. if prices are about to start dropping like a stone for any reason (eg. new glut of hardware coming out). Obviously new stuff is always coming out but if there's a particular push coming soon maybe it's worth waiting a month or so.

Thanks for any advice in advance.
