Hey guys I'm kind of new/out of date to all this so any advice would be greatly appreciated
I'm currently looking at getting my son a laptop for Christmas Ideally under £1000 and on finance would be great I have seen a couple but don't exactly know what I should be looking for.
Firstly he likes games like fallout or anything Bethesda, COD, Fortnite, red dead.
He will also need something that is good for his coursework throughout school/college
Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Push desktop if you can, but understandable if laptop needs to follow him with his studies .

Personally a laptop for study purposes should just be a cheap run of the mill type ones. Spending £1k on a laptop and then having it possibly stolen at school/college just isn't worth the risk.

Also even if you insure it, he'll need to make sure he's always keeping it on him. I think there was someone on here in the last 3-6 months who'd gone to the toilet and left their laptop in a classroom, obviously insurance wasn't going to pay out for the theft.

Hey all thanks for the replies. The reason why I am swaying towards laptop is because he is back and forth between parents he won't be needing to take it to school and college is a few years off yet

Does anyone have. Any ideas on a good laptop to suit the requirements. What is the lowest generation graphics card suitable for future proofing?

very decent laptop Skeletor I would look at the above or similiar spec. I bought two laptops from my sons, One an MSI GE72 I7 6700 with gtx 960 16gb RAM the other with an Acer Predator i5 7500 GTX 1050i 16gb RAM. Both play Fortnite on full settings @ 1080p, they also play Star Wars Battlefront I/II, Roblox etc. Understand the arguement for a desktop PC but with a laptop there is the portability to grand parents and less wires for them to fiddle with. Good pair of headphones and a chat app and they can talk to each other in game privately.

Only difference is I bought them 17.3" inc screen laptops. The MSI (i6700) was £1099 and the Acer (i5 7500) was £999.

In my opinion you need to look for 15.6" screen (preferably 17.3"), 16gb RAM, Intel i5 or Intel i7 processor, GTX 1050ti minimum, preferably GTX 1060 if possible.

dont listen to others, while desktops are better, unless you got some mini itx setup in a small case then a laptop is best for your solution plus its your money.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,010.45 (includes shipping: £10.50)

just to compare to a desktop version, obviously no i7, but they all 6 cores anyways and for less cables went with a large fast m.2 drive, the case should be pretty small to carry round from location to location, also unless you plan to overclock then the stock cooler(which isnt included standard i believe) will be enough.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £980.18 (includes shipping: £12.30)
no windows in this build as it can be sourced cheaper and obviously you need to factor in costs for a screen etx which can be had from used market and not be some crappy thing.

and here is an amd version, this time being able to fit a screen in and accessories in the budget, bust till no windows for same reason above, not saying speedlink are the best, but its an affordable bundle.

Total: £965.57 (includes shipping: £14.70)

its decent as said, however the one i listed thats on top of budget it much better, i would probably look for a 1050ti for the extra vram over the 3gb 1060 and that one you listed has a 7th gen i5, if you dont want to spend top budget on a laptop then atleast consider one of these thats not much more money and are better.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,561.03 (includes shipping: £11.10)

they are all 8th gen, 2 are i7's from the same brand, just slightly different and screen size and will have a better all round package.

no point spending that much money for a medium spec kabylake machine.

these are just whats on here, dont know what other sites might offer.

Okay I'm pretty much sold on the Asus that's a good laptop and slot more bang for buck compared with the others.
You guys have been a great help thank you. I'm sure my boy will be over the moon. Merry Christmas folks

have you ordered yet? its a cracking laptop for the price, but as you mentioned finance and me not knowing what the breakdown on this site, maybe look a bit higher priced and get a 1070 version? will be a happy kid regardless, was just a suggestion like.
