Gaming laptops

Confirming the general consensus is that I should only get a 7970m if it's in an alienware?

I had a Clevo with a HD7970M and it offered brilliant performance...until one day it just didnt. From then on it was just a regretable experience in driver hell.

In the end, the only way I could get the card to deliver its full performance in 3D applications was to send the laptop 'to Sleep' midgame, and then 'awaken' the laptop and go back into the game. Then I would get full performance until the next 2D menu/loading screen.

Absolute nightmare.....so yes, confirming your bias.

Thanks, the 680m is too much money for too little performance increase over the 7970m.

Ordered a m17x with a 7970m :)

I had a nice look around and no where seems to touch them for value at the minute which is shocking....

I agree with MatTheCat that you will no doubtly run into driver issues. Alienware seem to sign their own certified drivers, so you have to wait for them to upload it on their site usually a long time after the initial release by eg Nvidia. I think there was a way to bypass it though, which involved manually editing the .INI file that comes with drivers.

I own an Alienware M17x r4 and I’ve been using the very latest AMD CAT beta Mobile driver since I took delivery of my laptop.

Each time a new beta is released I tend to upgrade and not have a single problem with getting the drivers to install. Had issues with HDMI sound which had work arounds, then the latest AMD Beta seems to have resolved this issue.

The 7970M in the M17x is a cracking mobile GPU and a lot cheaper then the 680M. Alienware were wise to put in the Fn F7 feature to disable the integrated GPU.

Enjoy your new laptop. I agree Alienware have some aggressive prices on their laptops at the moment. The factory fitted upgrades like memory and SSD’s are still overpriced but buy a base model M17x with a 1080 screen and you can fit your own memory and SSD and still find it cheaper then nearly anything else on the market other then the Clevo – which has serious issues with a 7970M and I wouldn’t touch this at all,.

Not true at all for nvidia.

Yep, they charge far too much for the factory fitted SSD's etc..

Provided you get the 1080 screen and a 7970m or a 680m if you really dont want AMD then anything else is easy enough to upgrade with cheaper parts from OCUK.

The memory slots are both under the bottom and under the keyboard. I had to remove the keyboard to upgrade my memory, wasnt that hard. Alienware laptops are very modular. Very easy to work on.

damn ppl ordering them and I keep thinking ...wait ....wait..... you don't need one now :P
But then They are so good looking :D :P and beast to work with (in laptop terms )...

Even checking the outleet from time to time give nothing back ....seems like they released all of their refurb stock soem time ago in readiness for hanswell premier (wishful thinking) and nothing is showing there (not at usual time anyway) apart 660m

Just quoted myself £1,403.34 for 7970 + i7-3740QM with DVD (no need of BR)+ 6gb and 500HDD ...MUST resist ! :D

Yep i tried a week or so ago when i ordered my m14 alienware laptop, i applied the 7% discount code then the free shipping code and when i rung them up, they said that was the best price i was going to get from them with all the discount codes applied.

Tried to get him to upgrade me to the 750gb hd with 128gb msata boot drive but he wasnt having any of it so in the end went for the 500gb hd with the 128gb msata boot drive.

Hi there

We've sold out of our 7970M laptops now, so m17 is a good choice.

But if you can wait a few weeks we shall have new Haswell version with 4GB 8970M for around £1250ish delivered. :)
