Gaming laptops

Just priced up a m17 for just under £1500 for the spec I want (more or less). I can see the £200 off offer but where do the voucher offers come from?

Got mine on quidco (don't rely on the cashback)

Thought those codes had expired at the end of May, well when i ordered my Alienware thats what it said on the codes...looks like they probably extended the codes expiration dates.

Just got an email from Dell, my new alienware laptop should be with me by monday latest, cant wait as it was originally meant to be shipped out on the 13th of this month. So ill be mostly setting it up on monday evening...good bye dear old XPS1210 Dell laptop, you have lasted me the best part of 6 yrs and still running strong albeit slowing down.

Cheers for those coupons - saved £320 potentially. It's the sort of price I like, but I am thinking is it worth waiting for Haswell..

Then join the 'Waiting for Haswell' club. I scan the interwebz everyday for signs of retail available Haswell/GTX780M laptops. They are posted on a few websites but if you get in touch with these companies they will tell you that you would have to wait 3-4 weeks if you order from them.

Tomorrow, it is reported that the next gen MSI laptops should become available, although I am not sure if that would just be the high end MSI Dragon Edition 2, or their lower priced models also.

Hmm I see the new Haswell MSI's are in stock.. Now I do quite fancy this one and it is within budget but at the top end of what I wanted to spend.

Does anyone know anything much about these bearing in mind they are so new? I've done a bit of research. Some people are reporting problems with hinges and the internal speakers are a bit hit and miss. But how loud are they also?

I seriously hope this is not the case. From the reviews I have read, the Dynasound speakers are the best laptop sound that there is on offer and the build quality is also meant to be decent...at least more decent than the Clevos, where the build quality is pretty bad.

For these reasons especially, I have ordered the flavour above the model that you have linked to which is costing considerably more than a Clevo equivalent would cost.

Mine should be here within a couple of hours, I shall let you know anything I find amiss with it from my early impressions.

Oh yes please, I would be interested in hearing what you think. But I ordered mine anyway :D I'll expect it tomorrow. I don't need the raw power of the top end GPU but I wanted something more than half decent so hopefully the comprimise will work in my favour. I did some more research - apparently the first Haswell revisions feature a buggy USB 3 chipet - which can only be fixed by replacing hardware. But it's a minor bug apparently and may not even effect us. Other than that it all looks very good indeed.

The sound quality is very good for a laptop. Every bit as good as the quality of sound from a low end set of desktop speakers. That may not sound like a glowing commendation but on this laptop, I can actually bare to listen to music and other sound sources through the laptop speakers at a decent room filling volume. With the Clevo that I RMA'd, I couldn't bare to listen to any sounds through the laptop speakers at any more than a minimal volume level.

As for the build quality......really don't have any complaints so far. Solid, and lightweight (considering what is under the hood).

My only gripe is Windows 8. I really think that I am not going to like it....despite the usual thing people say; "now that I got used it, I actually prefer it".

I'm not a fan of win8 either at the mo, but I hear they are bringing the start button back (in a fashion anyway) so that will make things more tolerable. Glad to hear the speakers are decent and the build quality solid. It's nothing more than I expected to be honest. How is the noise? I don't mind some noise under load but I don't expect fans blowing a gale under idle.

At idle, noise is minimal providing thier is no disc in dvd drive.

To be honest, biggest issue with laptop by far is the operating system. If your laptop comes anything like mine did, then aside from the nonsensical layout of Windows 8, you will be plagued with freezes and system hangs.....

......and should you decide as I have, to install Windows 7 instead, you will soon discover that someone, somewhere, has made sure that this is a far more convoluted process than ever before. Microsoft really dont want people with Windows 8 to move back to Windows 7.
