Gaming magazines

Even with all the websites and online reviews we have these days I still find myself buying and enjoying a gaming magazine to peruse through every now and again. Normally I get PC gamer as their content 2/3 times is good. But I find their reviews are bit off.

Which magazine do you think is best, if there is such a thing these days. Gaming websites are a minefield that's for sure still looking for a reliable one.

I miss the days of gaming magazines, mainly PC Zone.

I really miss "duff game" reviews. There's a certain schadenfreude to them. These days, you're just looking for the best or most interesting sounding games, rather than engaging with the witticisms of a put down.

You only hear about bad games (e.g. Alien: Colonial Marines) if an anticipated game turns out to be poop.

I still have a subscription to Edge, I never got a gaming mag regularly but I got a gift voucher for a magazine subscription last Xmas, when it was up for renewal I just had an urge to re subscribe as I quite liked it dropping through the door every month.

I wouldn't say it's my favourite magazine as I can't make any comparison but it's good for getting info about games in the pipeline.

PC Zone was good. I also like Edge has a nice quality layout though the issues I've bought in the past seemed a little boring, I might give it another go, are the reviews any good? Their score for Alien and Driveclub will give me an idea as these games are an 8/10 for me when rated poor elsewhere.

I still subscribe to pc gamer, as I'm a bit old fashioned and like the look and feel of a mag.

It's a poor mans PC zone though really, which back in the day was such a great read all round.

I nearly got a job as the disc editor for pc zone back in the late 90s/ early noughties, in the days when Charlie brooker was there. Didn't get it in the end, was gutted at the time :)

stopped buying pcgamer after they started jumping on the hype bandwagon massively and made all the magazine content free on their website.

Yes I enjoy a magazine more, but not when its effectively a printout of the site at £7

I was gutted when PC Zone stopped. PC Gamer is pretentious twaddle bit like PC Format.

Although I do subscribe to Custom PC. That and Total Film are my read when I am doing my convenience.

Oh I so miss them days! :(

Input, ZZap 64, CV&G, Amiga Format and PC format. I still have a CV&G from 1985 and few others like Games Machine issue 1. ;)

I used to love computer mags! Coming home form school and seeing the latest CV&G on the hall table was a nights bliss! :D

Screw the internet lets go back to paper!! :p

I used to buy some of them on a fairly regular basis, such as Zone, Gamer, Format & Edge. Rather enjoyable to absorb yourself by reading the latest edition before lights out.

I still buy Custom PC. I do miss PC Zone, but I balk at the price of PC gamer, never really bought PC Format as it always seemed a bit more generic than Custom PCs attitude to tweaking and overclocking.

PC Zone was my joint, y0.

I've left my subscription running to PC Gamer, ever since it was switched when PC Zone folded. They've gotten a little edgier since, but nowhere near PCZ levels. I just like to have issues around to read on the bog. They populate both toilets in the house!

I still remember sending a heartfelt "woe is me" email entry to PC Zone for one of their giveaways (Sins of a Solar Empire), and the guy who handled those at the time wrote back to me asking for my address, saying "I normally don't reply to these, especially ones without an address, but send me your details and we shall see."

A few weeks later a package dropped through my door addressed to FIRSTNAME "WINNER" LASTNAME. It was my free copy of SoaSE. :D

Ed? Was that him? I mailed him to thank him when it got here and received an automated reply to say that he had left the magazine. Was gutted. :(

Yeah I used to love PC Zone, great magazine. No point in them in this world though.

Yep. Great in their day but we moved on.

I used to really look forward to the next edition of PC Zone and total film. Even when I was basically skint I would make sure I could afford them!

I still have old back issues of A.C.E dating back to 1989, as well as PC Zone, Amstrad Action, PCW and Atari ST Review. Great reads and sadly all gone :(

Not a clue what magazines exist today, just that I miss them heavily.

New computer mags to me was like 10 fags? cannot do without them! :p

Even when skint. :(

New computer mag Vs 10 fags now that was a battle! :p

Weird seeing this thread, as I had a weird urge to buy a gaming mag the other day.
I used to read lots of different types. Stopped when I started earning my first wages.

I used to love reading PCGamer until Tim Edwards took over and turned it into a humour-free bore-fest with a horrible layout(even the paper quality became terrible).

GamesTM with it's retro section was always an enjoyable read and was good value for the amount of content you got.

Your Sinclair was my childhood read of choice.

Completely loved that magazine.

That brings back some memories :D

I remember reading the Spectrum mags, and the reviews always made me laugh, the funny comments they would put under the pics in the review, and the main review itself was always funny and full of life. Anything I now read is totally boring and so robotic, I just don't bother now, shame really :(
