I've never owned a proper gaming mouse and I've always done well without, I just have a bog standard optical mouse which seems to do the job fine.
How much of a difference do they really make?

With a proper gaming mouse (high dpi) u start owning noobs more often... it's just so much more precise and you feel more in control.. definately worth it...

yes ... but they dont make up for a lack in skills /down ego !!!

rof ! erm, ive got a razor copperhead, best investment in a long time

I've got to disagree :p

Upgraded to the Saitek 1600dpi gaming mouse from a bog standard MS optical intellly job, but there was no significant improvement in my eyes to justift the cost. Paying £40+ for something that looks nice is silly, as all you have is a higher level of sensitivity and some cool looking LED's. ;)

/Runs away. :o

dont think it really has any significant impact, all marketing and pscyhological.

couldnt care less what mouse keyb i use as long as its comfy. just change the sensitivity/settings to what I like.

I'm not sure there's a lot in it. They seem to spend a suspicious amount of money on marketing and making it look cool, which is a bad thing in my books. If something is that good it doesn't need to be made to look cooler.

Still using a very old microsoft optical mouse. I like to think it does the job fine as I'm so used to it now :)

Smooth gameplay will make a bigger difference than your mouse. A gaming mouse won't save you in CSS if you're only running on a GeForce 2 :p

A good mouse won't make you a good player, but they can make a good player better ;)

Very true.

More mouse buttons/higher response/comfyer.

At the end of the day they all add up if you want to play better. You use the mouse 100% of the time when gaming, so make it comfy and too what you want !

I don't know about gaming mice in general, but the reason I bought an MX518 was for situational adaptation in Battlefield 2 and similar games.

The ability to increase or decrease sensitivity at the press of a button is important when going from infantry combat to, for example, sniping or manning a turret on a moving vehicle.

I will tune my sensitivity down to minimum for the former and up to maximum for the latter.

Feel a lot more in control aswell. They feel more responsive than your bog standard optical mouse, have the Razer Copperhead (sexy red not blue that everyone seems to get :P) and its so much easier to use.

What about the assignable buttons and extra features you get ?
My MX1000 is a fantastic bit of kit, Very precise, very ergonomic and extra assignable buttons give me the edge.
Prior to the 1000 i had the MX510, i would never be without either one of them.
Yes a decent mouse is very much worth the money.
MX1000's are real cheap these days as they have been surpassed by other in my opinion lesser models (Less buttons).
Get yourself an MX1000 and at the price you will pay it's a steal.
My 1000 has lasted brilliantly and i got it second hand from M&M, i play a serious amount of games and it hasn't let me down once.
Brilliant mouse and brilliant support after purchase. A quick phone call to Logi and they send you a new set of feet for nowt.
Logitech Rox.
There customer service is second to none * and i am happy to be a Logitech fanboy.

* I can prove this if needed and will blow you away with how Logitech have looked after me.

or for those of us who dont own joysticks, afew taps of that button really helps in a plane :p

Used to have a standard MS optical mouse, got me a Razer Diamondback last year and never looked back since, also bought a Q-pad mouse mat which helps retain the responsivness.

I play UT, UT2004, HL2 Deathmatch, COD, COD2, BF, BF2 and CSS and its made a significant difference to my game, especially the igib style games (one shot, one kill etc)

Will never get a cheap mouse ever again.

Yes they do make a difference and it depends on weather your a high or low sensitivity gamer and the most important thing is that it fits well and feels compertable in your hand.

I have a Razer Dimondback and find it does everything I want it to do and its fantastic for all the games I play, cod2, CSS, bf2, bf2142.

still using an MX510 (think its 2 years old now), i didn't notice much difference from old ms optical mouse. But i was never that good before :p
