Gaming mice - Do they really make that much difference?

and making it look cool

Oh come on, it has to look good :)

Got a Razer pro solutions (the white, blue lit one) silver keyboard, backlit with blue light, silver lcd, silver 5.1 surround set up thingy, and nzxt lexa (I think, the one that looks like a zylon) blue lit of course!

You have to co-ordinate chaps :)

I don't know about gaming mice in general, but the reason I bought an MX518 was for situational adaptation in Battlefield 2 and similar games.

The ability to increase or decrease sensitivity at the press of a button is important when going from infantry combat to, for example, sniping or manning a turret on a moving vehicle.

I will tune my sensitivity down to minimum for the former and up to maximum for the latter.
I do exactly the same with my Habu :)

Not really, although obviously it is all relative - people using a 2-button serial mouse will likely see a big improvement.

I've owned the following mice:

Generic serial mouse
Logitech Pilot ps2
Logitech Mouseman Wheel (*5)
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer
Logitech Mouseman Optical
Logitech Mouseman Dual Optical
Logitech MX500
Logitech MX510
Logitech MX518
Logitech G5

To be honest, I didn't notice much improvement beyond the MM Dual optical. In fact, the Mouseman Wheel is a fantastic mouse for righthanders, the only drawback being the fact you have to clean the rollers. I actually imported 3 from the USA after they stopped selling them in Europe.

I'm still using my MX700 (that was *the* gamers mouse a few years ago wasn't it) and love it.

Bought it for £30 second hand, and it's never skipped a beat. Super silky in games, just need to sort my hand movements out now!

Brilliant mouse and brilliant support after purchase. A quick phone call to Logi and they send you a new set of feet for nowt.
Logitech Rox.
There customer service is second to none * and i am happy to be a Logitech fanboy.

* I can prove this if needed and will blow you away with how Logitech have looked after me.

Really? just off the website? cause the only bugbear I have with my MX1000 is that the feet are worn down :)

might try that and ask nicely ;)

Couldn't live without my Razer Diamondback. I've had it 2 years now and it's probably one of the best purchases I've had in that time.

It is exactly the right size and weight for me and I can't even use other computers nowadays without feeling at a loss without my mouse.

It's also funny to watch people on your pc trying to use it as I have the sensitivity very high and 1cm of mouse movement moves the cursor half way across the screen :D.

Razor Diamondbacks don't last too long for gaming though unfortunately, I've owned two of them and the left mouse button very quickly stopped working properly and it became an absolute pain just clicking anything normally whenever I wasn't playing. Definitely the last time I'm spending £30+ on a bleedin mouse. :p

copperhead's are bad, get a G5 or 518

Brought a copperhead and hated it from the start so ordered a mx518 instead
while waiting for it to be delivered i used the copperhead after 2 days i started to love it and now wouldn't be without it.
I plugged the mx518 in for a try and took it straight out again it felt so heavy, unsmooth and just inaccurate compared the copperhead.
