I've a pair of Sennheiser PC150s that seem to be nearing the end of their life-span, with frequent comments regarding how the Mic seems to be cutting out.

I've taken a while searching past threads, and although a large proportion of people choose gaming headsets, there seems to be a recommendation towards a decent pair of Hi-Fi headphones and a separate mic.

Now I'm interested in picking up a quality pair of headphones as very rarely use speakers, however, for me the microphone is equally important and with a noisy graphics card and housemates background noise I don't want to settle for a cheap plastic deskmic.

I'm aware that Zalman produce the ZM-MIC, a clip-on mic, sometimes bundled with their 5.1 headphones, however it doesn't seem to be stocked anywhere in the UK.

Can anyone recommend a reliable clip-mic model, or a desk-mic model that would work well in my situation, or should I forget that idea and stick to a gaming headset?

Bump because I want to know the answer to this too. I'm sick of buying all in one headsets, only for the thing to break a year or so down the line.

So I've soaked up the information on these here forums and am going to buy a decent set of headphones and a seperate microphone.

I'm buying a pair of Grado SR60 headphones, but I can't help but think that a desktop microphone just isn't going to cut the mustard. I attend quite a few small LAN parties and I can envisage having problems with a desktop mic.

Any ideas?

Have you ever thought about using the xbox mic? I use my wired mic via my 360 pad and its really great on teamspeak. You can channel the audio from teamspeak to use the 360 headset.

This is what I do also, that combined with my surround sound, great gaming experience online :D

Even with the game volume really loud and me using *shout to talk* over teamspeak its dead clear even when I speak at a normal volume. Not had anyone complaining they can hear my game either.

I got a "HAMA CS-146" from an e-tailer and it seems to fit the "rubbish plastic desk mic" criteria perfectly, so unfortunately that's going back.

I'll look into the logitech one

well having finally killed the mic from my 161's (by walking off with my headset still attached) and having the "odd" crackle from the headset I have decided to replace the mic with a desktop one, cost me £5 and sounds OK and opted for a pair of HD555's

I know the 555's are expensive but by all accounts they sound awsome with a decent sound card

quoted for the truth, I got rid of my sennheiser pc 160's for a set of HD555's and replaced the mic with the one from an old set of icemat siberia's and it does the job perfectly when coupled with my X-Fi Xtreme Music, I can't fault it.

Might try the logitech...
I'm considering the following areas of the market for a decent mic:

Telephone conferencing unit - hopefully something might have decent range and noise cancelling, too bad these units normally cost LOTS and I'm not sure of a decent 3.5mm connector.

Mobile Phone handsfree/bluetooth. Possibly clip-on mic, hopefully some good stuff for voice transmission, maybe noise cancelling, but 3.5mm connectors?

Have a look at SteelSeries SteelSound 5H v2 Gaming Headset reviews. Microphone has a nice feature where it retracts into the headphones which aren't that bad themselves.

After going through (tons of) 'gaming' headsets I settled with a pair of Sennheiser HD-555's and a logitech desktop mic, never looked back!
