I have a 27" (16:10) 60Hz monitor now which is fine but I know a 120Hz monitor should be better for gaming. I am very happy with 27" so around that size, not smaller anyway. Is 120Hz sufficient or is there any point in going 144Hz? Any monitors recommended?

Budget, around £400 max.

Hi :)

120hz feels amazing.
144hz feels a marginal improvement.
60hz is just horrible :D

The bottom line is that personally I wouldnt let 120hz/144hz influence you too much, as long as you get one of them :) whatever seems a good deal really.

I absolutely love the Asus 27", and I've owned both the 120hz + 144hz variants and they're both super smooth and pleasant to use.

It'll take a lot more than 1440p to persuade me to go near 60hz of doom again :D

144hz is a pretty imperceptible improvement over 120hz in terms of motion clarity and input responsiveness.

You're kind of asking the wrong question though, with the recent developments in 2D Lightboost hacks and Eizo's backlight strobing implementation it's a moot point.

Of course the Lightboost hacks had some issue with degrading image quality and motion artifacts which Eizo's "240hz" black frame insertion mode fixes.

If you can stretch a bit the new Eizo Foris FG2421 seems to be the best general purpose 1080p panel around at the moment, though some people are having QC issues so buy from a retailer with a solid return policy.

Things may change with the introduction of G-Sync on IPS and VA panels this year or so, hopefully Nvidia figure out a way to combine a low persistence mode with G-Sync since apparently they're not compatible at the moment.

Hey chap, let me tell you ,I recently bought a Asus vg278he 144 hz monitor .I went from a 60 hz one and if I'm honest the difference is amazing . Now I'm not a pro game nor do I have a top of the line PC , I do run 7950 s in crossfire if that's any help and I do not get any were near 144 fps in bf4 but I do run on ultra everything and it just runs amazing. This is the second biggest upgrade I've done and by far its been worth every penny. I must admit I've not quite got the settings quite right on the monitor but I would not go back to60 hz again. Also I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews and I choose this over the benq but its a personnel choice. Go for it chap I'm telling you you will not be disappointed. Also I do buy as much stuff from oc if I can but got my monitor from elsewhere coss it was a good saving on what it sells for at oc.

what Hz have you got BF4 set to in the video options ?
144 or 120 ?

I'm asking as I cannot get my HD7990 to run @ 144hz and cannot find anywhere that states it can..... (and my 7990 is basically x2 of your cards)

Hey m8, tbh when I went in to bf4 settings for the first time when I got the monitor the setting ad automatically gone to 144 hz…..only problem I ad was if I set my desktop red to 144 hz and the tryed to play bf4 I would get a bsod when the game loaded up. When I set my desktop res to 120 everything worked fine..….av you tryed to change ur hz in bf4 to 144 ?
Set your desktop res to 120 hz then go in to bf4 settings I've got I feeling you should be able to enable 144 hz then m8….

I'm also in the same situation, don't know if I should move to a 120hz monitor. I got a 27" 1440p monitor

I can't really tell between 120 and 144hz. I've had an Asus 120hz 3D Vision Rev 1, 144hz Benq 2411XT and now the Eizo 120hz PVA, they're all comparable really in terms of responsiveness, the Eizo is a world ahead colour wise but then it's also a world away price wise. :D My Hazro 27" 1440p monitor was hidden under a thick layer of dust before it was sent back, totally dead to me, 60hz is just too blurry.

3D Vision and Lightboost don't work at 144hz iirc so you'd need to run at 120hz anyway if you chose to use either of those. I wouldn't let 144hz dictate your buying decision.
