What is the difference between a gaming mouse mat and a bog standard one you'd get from the people in purple shirts for a fiver?

Are they honestly worth £15-30?

What sort of difference do you see between a normal mat and gaming mat?

And if it really is worth it, then what goes best with a microsoft habu for playing fps games? Mainly bf 2142.

thanks :)

I need one, mostly because my desk has lines that run across it that make the pointed jump both in Windows and in-game. I wouldn't bother with one otherwise, the desk is smooth enough.

I used a Func pad. For FPS games, especially on-line, you really need a "proper" pad. I've tried various other surfaces and none of them feel quite as accurate, to me anyway.

improved accuracy/tracking/control of the mouse is what they are for

If you are a hardcore FPS player and need to get that pixel perfect shot in for the winning head shot then its far better/easier to do with a nice mouse mat with the type of surface you prefer (smooth or rough) than it is with a poorly textured corner of a broken desk

pretty much sums it up and you can also add to that size which is important for people with low sensetivities like myself..

i used to play on a desk it was fine but nothing comparable to a proper mousepad..
