Question for anyone using a gaming grade mouse: do you actually notice a difference in accuracy / movement / smoothness over conventional e.g. microsoft intellimouse

i had an MX500, bought a G5. Didnt initially notice much difference, but then started to use the MX500 on my laptop and realise how much easier the G5 slides accross my desk, and how much nicer it feels in the hand. Wouldnt say it improved my gaming, that would take a lot more than a mouse, but it is definately a much nicer mouse to use.

I have never subscribed to this whole malarky about a mouse improving your aim. I think a person will adapt to whatever mouse they use.

Whats important is comfort. Thats why I went from my MX1000 to a Genius gaming mouse to my current Deathadder. The deathadder is jsut comfortable and feels better in my hand than the others.

I do wish it were a little longer, but can't have everything.

Does matter to certain extent, my old dell mouse was useless

some mice, are so rubbish you can never get used to them. higher sensitivity ensures smoother movement + good shape to suit your hand = easier to move as an extension of your arm and more natural reflex to shoot people down quicker. i went from a rubbish 5 pound mouse to G7 and the difference is huge my kill ratio went from 1:1 to like 5 kills to 1 death for that day.. mabye i got lucky

Some mice are indeed awful, but there's little to choose from between both decent mice. In particular, I never bought into the whole "wireless is too slow" thing - I have both plugged in as we speak, just got off Q3A and didn't notice a difference. If anything, the drag of the cord makes the wired slower!

What IS important is a decent gaming surface. I have a wooden table, and the slight difference in colour in the wood grain sometimes makes the optical sensor skip a bit in its tracking. I use a mousepad, but it's a cloth one and the mouse feet don't slide on it as smoothly as they could. Saw some decent mousepads about but they cost £10-15 which I thought was ridiculous for a rectangular piece of monochrome plastic!

I found the logitech gaming mice fitted my hand a lot better, thus a lot comfier. I originally had the MX518, but the right mouse button wouldnt work if i held it down, so it wasnt much use in STALKER!

I went on to a G5 next. I always thought the weights were a gimmick, but I fund they weren't. I've now got it set up so that its the perfect weight for me.

I'd say gaming mice are worth it.

Yeah I have a diamonback which was great compared to my standard lazer mouse before. Of course takes a bit to adapt to it but the extra speed it gives makes gaming a lot easier, also comfortable to use. I can play on the pc for hours without and strain, used an apple mac for 10 mins today and found my hand+arm hurting.

Gaming grade mice (ie. mice over £20) will definitely be better than an average mouse in at least one area:
Comfort
Less/No screw-ups (Some average mice will occasionally suddenly go to the top of the screen)
Accuracy (Ie. it will detect the surface better, giving you more even movement. I've used some mice that can't keep up if you move it really fast).

Except for comfort, you only need a gaming grade mouse for games that require it, ie. FPSs

Gaming mice are about as useful as gaming NIC's....
Get a decent mid-end ratter e.g the Logitech MX5xx series, and you're laughing all the way. All these silly 4000 dpi with turboprecision sensors etc. crap are just gimmicks

MS Rats - Carp.
Logitechs - The bogs dollox minus their setuppppoint sofwatware.

Note: I am utterly ratended having just reutrned from an xmas party but you know i make sense!

mx518 was the best mouse i have owned, i upgraded to the mx1000 and i dont like it as much but i needed wireless

little hijack, if anyone has any suggestions for a wireless mouse which is reasonably priced which is shaped like a 518 and has a good number of buttons i would be very appreciative

i've used many many mice, and can only say this:
if it cost less than £25 when first introduced, its not worth it.

i've used MS intellimice (pretty good, actually) and wireless explorer mice, as well as logitech consumer-crap and so on. so far, the best mouse i've used is the MX518.

I have spent a lot of money on mice over the years:

Dodgy generic serial mouse
Logitech Pilot
Logitech Mouseman Wheel (x5)
Intellimouse Explorer (took it back in less than a week)
Logitech Optical Mouseman
Logitech Mouseman Dual Optical
Logitech MX500
Logitech MX510
Logitech MX518
Logitech G5

To be honest I haven't really noticed any main difference between most of the mice. The Mouseman Wheel is a lovely weighted creature, great for smooth shafting, but the fact it is a ball mouse means it suffers from wear-and-tear. And the early optical mice were a bit dodgy if you moved them incredibly quickly. But I found most of the MX series to be much of a muchness.

The G5 doesn't seem quite as good as the MX518, however. No massive difference, but having to lose a couple of buttons is annoying.

I came from a Microsoft Intellimouse to the Logitech MX 518 and there was a huge difference, the MX 518 is much better. The scroll wheel on the 518 is actually usable as a middle-mouse button unlike any of Microsoft's latest mice and it doesn't have the silly smooth scrolling so you can actually get tactile feedback. The accuracy is also a lot better and you can select from one of 5 speed settings by pressing either + or - buttons on the mouse whilst in-game (or create game specific profiles). It has the forward and back buttons like the MS mice (5 button mouse) so you can assign them in game, if you have never used a 5-button or greater mouse then you've missed out. I use the two extra buttons in games such as Team Fortress, one is for voice transmit (speak) and the other is used for switch to previous weapon (very useful). They take the default assignment of forward/back in most browsers and windows explorer.
