I'm currently using a bog standard optical usb mouse and looking to replace it after using it for so many years.

Is a gaming mouse worth getting? Is there a big difference or just a gimmick? I do play shoot em ups from time to time. Am I at a disadvantage using a standard mouse and playing online ? :D

If so, any recommendations in the region of £40?

Do you hold the mouse with your palm and move your entire arm around or do you grip the mouse with your fingers, keeping your wrist planted in the same place?

People will recommend the Razer Deathadder and the Logitech MX518.

If you like the curved shape of the Deathadder, and you have enough room on your desk, I'd go for this bundle. The Boogie Bug pad has been widely praised on here, this thread in particular.

You're what people call a "claw" grip then! Urgh, filthy :p

I have no idea what's better for the claw grip types, but that might help you in your search as some mice tend to be better for them.

:edit: also, see my edit above!

using the SteelSeries Xai, had no problems with it at all and has always rescued me :D Also have Deathadder as work mouse :)

Would you recommend the Xai over the Deathadder? I've been borrowing the same Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 for the past 5 years, so I'm pretty sure that I am going to need a mouse that is very similar to that.

The Deathadder looks like a carbon copy of the IME 3.0 , with a little extra flare, whereas the Xai appears to be more of an Intellimouse 2.0 mimic!
