Hi all,

It's been a while since I bought a gaming PC, and I want to get a check before I buy.

I'm thinking about the spec below (coming in at £1650).

What would you trade in/out? What's overpriced, where is the value etc.
  • Gigabyte Z370P DC ATX Motherboard
  • i7-8700k 3.7ghz - (thinking I can OC this to ~4.5ghz?)
  • Corsair Hydro H60 v2 liquid cooler (to help with the OC)
  • 16gb Vulcan Ram
  • MSI Geforce GTX 1080 Armor OC
  • Kolink KL-500 broze power
  • Samsung 500gb 850 EVO SSD
  • 1 TB HDD
  • Asus Xonar 5.1 sound
Thanks!

Personally id swap the PSU for something more sturdy, I'm sure Kolink isn't as bad as people say but with a system like you've picked id rather be sure with the PSU :)

if you can get the MSI 1080 cheaper then fair play . Aorus board comes with Farcry 5 , eisaber cooler , 360 unit is one of the best to hit 5ghz with 8700k and keep it coolish- beats corsair flagship units

Case is personal choice

overshoots but could always sell game code!

also silent loop 360- alphacool is the OEM for bequiet is on sale, uses quieter fans and unit is 30mm (copper) thick instead of 25mm (copper) thick

It's been a few years (almost 10) since I actually built a rig, so I was tempted to get overclockers to pre-build.

My original spec was based off the below to save the effort, but the above obviously comes in cheaper. No sound card?

sound cards not needed, boards can match them pretty much, some beat them. they make their cash by supplying the chipset to the board makers

gtx 1070ti overclocked can match defualt gtx 1080 10gbps card

Both those specs look awesome, thanks.

I just need to decide whether it's worth building it myself again, for a step up to the i7 8700k & GTX 1080.

Gut says yes - how hard can it be right.

Honestly you'll be fine, Don't rush it and use manuals/youtube... But a word of warning, Once you've built one you'll probably get the bug and want to build again and again :p

i read that as once you've built and see a few naked cables, you'll rebuild it. and spot a few more, and rebuild and rebuild till no cables can be seen... then realise you want cables to be seen but nice cables and spend a ton on pretty cables ... haha

Hahah exactly that, even after a few weeks you stand back and look at it then think, I need some cables that stand out:p or if your like me you end up buying some LED Fans and LED strips :p

I was tempted by them, I'm guessing you need an RGB connection on your Motherboard to make them function, Mine only has LED connections :(

(without comprimising on CPU or GPU.... :))

solution one, downloading windows media tool creator or what ever its called and then unpacking to a usb stick and using that to install and getting a Key from somewhere ...
also selling FC5 CD key

solution two...

wont see to much difference between gtx 1070ti and gtx 1080 once you OC the card a little

keeping same case, losing free FC5 game but droping to Gaming 3 board for Gigabyte rma/support
