Yeah, the R9 290(x) are great. However, the R9 290X is not worth the extra over the R9 290 as the performance difference doesn't justify the quite large extra cost :)

Normally yes. But when you can only have so many cards, and want the best performance possible at 4K for a certain budget... then you want to eke out as much FPS as you can. So in this case, the 290X makes a bit more sense to me, personally.

I was kinda thinking that, but then thought nah. Can't some 290s be flashed to 290X speeds anyway?
 
This is pretty interesting. There isn't THAT much of a gap between R9 290 crossfire and R9 290X crossfire at 4K according to the link below.

So maybe a couple of R9 290's or a couple of 780's would suffice.

That's crazy close even at 4K, 'cept for Tomb Raider but even then the 290 is close enough to 60 FPS anyway.

I was surprised when i read it. I was expecting at least 10-15fps gap between 290cf and 290x cf.
