Morning all,

My son has asked if he can buy himself a gaming pc and has asked for my help in spec'ing one. It'll mainly be for Fortnite and Minecraft (to begin with, although I may jump on it every now and then for Iracing). I think the last time i built a PC was around 2004 so not really sure whats good/bad these days.

I was looking to get one built to order (so that i know it works when it arrives...) and spec'd this one on the site

OcUK Gaming Kalis - AMD Ryzen 5 5500 GeForce RTX 4060 Gaming PC

SKU FS-1FT-OG
  • 1x Kolink Observatory MX Mesh ARGB Midi Tower Case - Black
  • 1x AMD Ryzen 5 5500 Six Core 4.2GHz (Socket AM4) Processor - Retail
  • 1x Team Group Vulcan Z T-Force 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey
  • 1x Build - Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 WindForce OC 8GB GDDR6 Graphics Card
  • 1x Kolink Umbra EX180 Black Edition CPU Cooler - 120mm
  • 1x WD Blue SN580 1TB SSD NVME M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 Solid State Drive
  • 1x Asus USB-AX56 Dual Band AX1800 USB WiFi Adapter
this comes in at £819 and then added the Asus 27" VA27EHF monitor £98.99

For those in the know, is this a reasonable spec machine for a newbee PC gamer?

Thanks for any assistance

Adam

Check PPI on that monitor 27" for 1080P?? When I had 1080p 24" I thought it was too pixelly for that size, 1200p was much better. And I have bad eyes, so someone with better vision would see that low PPI.

80 pixels and inch. yuck
24" 1080p is 91 and I found that too low
24" 1200 was 93 and that seemed noticeable better that the one above in though only 2 difference maybe difference in pixel layout a poor one for the 1080p?
27" 1440p is 108 I need to use 25% scaling

Best go and see a few yours, a few different sizes/resolution in windows and games.

As much as I do like OcUK their pre-builds are not great value, including the one you have linked to here.

Also looks like it will include a poor Kolink PSU etc, £800 should be getting you a far more capable (And reliable) machine.

I would also consider building your own, you could do it together, he'd prob enjoy it and it is super easy.

Thanks guys, I dont him to spend a chunk on money on a machine that will then need upgrading sooner than necessary.

I'd be happy to build it, but get lost with components these days, well actually motherboards if I'm honest and whether i should go AMD or Intel.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated

Heres a couple of builds one on AM4 and the other AM5, AM5 is a bit more expensive but offers more upgradability going forward as its the current generation platform.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £915.86 (includes delivery: £0.00)

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,069.86 (includes delivery: £0.00)

What's the max budget you would be happy to go to as sometimes an extra £100 towards a better GPU can give you big gains and also the ability to game at a higher resolution ?

Budget can flex a little but would prefer to keep it under £1100 if possible. Might be false economy but i'm happy for him to get a resonable spec machine now and then learn about upgrading as time goes on and he gets in to games requiring better resolutions etc.

Does he have a TV in his room? While not ideal, you can use them as monitors and it would save some money that could go towards a better system. He could get a dedicated monitor later on after saving up easily enough.

At the lower end of the budget it doesn't really matter which you choose, since the Ryzen 5600 and 12400F perform almost the same. I would not recommend you get a slower CPU than these two.

Motherboard: B550 for the Ryzen 5600 or B760 for the Intel 12400F, as close to £100 as possible. I would avoid the lowest-end boards with no heatsinks.

The next step is a 5800X for £135 or 12600KF for £145. I would be reluctant to spend more than that, on these dated platforms.

If you're able to afford AM5, then you can get a A620/B650 motherboard and a Ryzen 7500F/7600, which will have better upgradability in the future.

Graphics, something like:
- For entry-1080p: RX 6600 for ~£180.
- For 1080p: 4060 for ~£250.
- For entry-1440p: 6750 XT for ~£300, or a 7700 XT if you can find one under £350 (have been some good deals lately).
- For 1440p: 4070 non-Super or 7800 XT for ~£450.
- For 4K: 7900 XT for ~£600.

Thanks for that Tetras, i'll have a look at some components tonight and see what i can come up with.

Thanks to everyone else too, all advice taken onboard - will keep you posted with the final build spec.

Spent the day morning on Saturday building it, had an issue with it not booting up but after some diagnosing it turned out one of the RAM sticks was faulty (new set ordered and these are being returned) so only used one stick to get him up and running. He absolutely loves it and he has plenty of scope to upgrade it (once he has paid for this build first...).

Thanks all for your help
