You'll have to have a scout around for deals, as can't squeeze am5 in budget sticking with ocuk.

If going for am5 for upgrade ability, it might be worth avoiding the a620 boards, and tbh they aren't much cheaper than the b650 anyway

The GPU is slightly left field, but it's at least as good as the rx6600 and will play Games at 1080p, and still be high quality if not ultra and still be playable

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £489.97 (includes delivery: £0.00)[/I

This morning I ordered the msi b650m gaming plus wifi motherboard and thr ryzen 7600x cpu. Still need some thermal paste.

Also may purchase the Thermalright Assassin King 120, only think I don't know is will it fit ?

And gpu wise you am thinking maybe the

B Grade Sapphire Radeon RX 7600 Pulse Gaming 8GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card that @Craig_d1 recommended, os the b grade just slight use in shop etc ?

Thanks dean

No idea there  ordered it anyway, like I say aslong as works seems a great deal so only need thermal paste now. Hopefully should be a great machine for him.

Thanks again everyone, should hopefully be a bit future proof now and be better at gaming for him with a better gpu and cpu and also it's AM5 so very happy with it.

Will look back to see the thermal paste recommended or should it come with cooler ?

Thanks dean

Paste should come with the cooler.

I couldn't see the option to put offer in, I did send a message however says can take days as was worried would miss out.

Also says saving £60 not £30

I have just looked online and see what you mean. Cancelled order and will pay £30 more. Thanks for that.

rather than me explaining, below is much more detailed... if you scroll down you'l see the 5500 performs worse than the 3600

I konw it's tough if you've got a hard £500 limit, but tremember the am4 platform is old, and was replaced with am5 2 years ago..there's plenty of people upgrading to am5 now.. getting hold of a 5600 cpu isn't that difficult, and you should be able to puck it up cheaper than a 5500 new.. just a quick scan isee a new 5600x is £98 with free delivery
also seen 32gb vengeance lpx 3200C16 for £41.99 on black fri deal..it's xmp but generally the work..if want ryzen 3600c18 is 44.99(and that is for ryzen)
they also have a b550M DS3h mobo for £69.98, but that mobo can get toasty...just seen the msi b550m-vdh matx board for the same price...get that one instead

so a 5600x/msi b550m vdh/32 gb 3600c18 is £212.97
your 5500/msipro-a/16gb ram is £196

seen auction site new 5600 for 79.99..that'll take bundle down for £213 to £195...same price as your bundle...the pro-a is a metter mobo though, but the vdh will run a 5600 no problem..it survived running a 1hr blender with a 3950x
Mean i know the 5500 wont be that great, but since i got rid of my system with a 3600 ages ago, i purchased both a 3100 and 4500 as replacements and at the time when i was reading about them, it seemed the advice was to avoid the 4000 series. As it happened, i did find the 3100 better than the 4500, but im not a big pc gamer like i once was, so probably didnt put them to the test.

I build computers and buy majority of parts used, so i know theres much better options to take. However 5500 seemed to be the best cpu OC is selling from amd and for a budget of 500 using only new parts and from here then it would still be a good starting point despite a not so great processor. 5600 onwards is a no brainer, but you'd have to look elsewhere. Though the motherboard i chose wouldnt be ideal for the simple fact of how much it costs to make sense in a budget build.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £726.96 (includes delivery: £7.99)

Or go with a 5000 series. 2 years is a long time, a lot can involve and games have already caught up to using 8 core, so id say if you went am5 and can find some deals then go the 8 core route. 6 core are still very good, 8 core will last longer.

The extra 2 cores aren't worth the cut in cache. The op has purchased the correct cpu

You can run without a key while you look for a cheap one, all you lose is minor functionality that wont effect gaming or general use.
