Gaming PC Stability and Performance Issues

Hello All,

I could do with some help with my PC set up.
  • I am currently experiencing issues with certain games (Clair Obscur being one of them) where my frames occasionally drop below 60, GPU runs at 90% and my CPU runs at 30% - Is this to be expected?
  • I have also experienced issues with Elden Ring where the game repeatedly freezes, not sure if this is to do with my set up or shaders?
  • And not long back my PC crashed with the Stop Code: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (0x9F) - Not sure if this is relevant to my set up?
Ultimately I could do with some guidance on whether or not I am getting the most out of my PC. I'm not interested in pushing my set up to the limits but if there is anything I can do to improve and optimise it then I am open to do so.

My specs are:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X,
Vermeer 7nm Technology
RAM: 32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1330MHz (18-18-18-43)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 (AM4)
Graphics: 4014MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 (ASUStek Computer Inc)
PSU: 650W SEASONIC GC-650 Gold - 90% Efficiency
Storage: 931GB Western Digital WDC WDS100T2B0C-00PXH0
3726GB Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 4000GB

And not long back my PC crashed with the Stop Code: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (0x9F) - Not sure if this is relevant to my set up?
Just the once?

PSU: 650W SEASONIC GC-650 Gold - 90% Efficiency
This seems a bit underpowered for a 5080, though not necessarily an issue.

Elden Ring where the game repeatedly freezes, not sure if this is to do with my set up or shaders?
Does any other game do this? Does it still run fine apart from the freeze, or does it require a reset of the PC?

At what resolution/settings?

I'd suggest running a benchmark that produces a consistent score like 3D Mark Timespy, which you can then check against other stock 5080.

Graphics: 4014MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 (ASUStek Computer Inc)
I assume that's a reporting issue because it has 16GB, not 4.

Just the once?
Yes just the once.

Seems to be just Elden ring, and yes it runs fine other than the freezing.

At what resolution/settings?
Usually I try to run these games at max/epic/ultra graphics where I can.

I'd suggest running a benchmark that produces a consistent score like 3D Mark Timespy, which you can then check against other stock 5080.
After running 3D Mark Timespy:

Time Spy Score: 21475
Graphics Score: 27115
CPU Score: 9857

Time Spy Score: 21475
Graphics Score: 27115

A google suggests that is not terrible, but both graphics and CPU scores appear to be around ~20% lower than expected.

What are the temperatures and power draw for CPU and GPU while you're playing?

Did you happen to notice anything unusual in the graphs that 3D produces of frequency and such during the benchmark?

Seems to be just Elden ring, and yes it runs fine other than the freezing.
Anything in the event viewer? How often does it freeze?

Usually I try to run these games at max/epic/ultra graphics where I can.
At what resolution? 4K?

it's the gpu transient spikes that's causing elden ring to crash, there's really no need to think so deep
the incorrectly specced power supply is responsible for the global 20% less performance than expected

5950x ppt = 142w, with pbo it's 200w
5080 tgp = 360w, transient spikes would put it well north of 450w
and that's not taking into account every other component in the build. a genius will work out quickly that a 650w psu is inadequate

During the benchmark:
Power draw was similar to what tamzzy said.
CPU Temp: Around 85
GPU Temp: Around 50

Anything in the event viewer? How often does it freeze?
Nothing in event viewer, Every couple of minutes.

At what resolution? 4K?
At 1440p

So upgrading the power supply is a given, and could have the potential to fix the Elden ring issue. Is there anything else that I would benefit from upgrading?

depends on your budget and what you use your pc for. a 5950x is the end-game cpu for AM4 for productivity workloads (but not for gaming)

Ok, could you suggest a suitable motherboard and power supply, budget £500 but this is flexible

Try power limiting your parts first and see how you get on, the GPU especially.

The 5080 runs with a lot more voltage than necessary, frankly the entire 5000 series does. You probably should replace your PSU, but you'd benefit either way and confirm the issue by running an undervolt.

Check this thread: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...overclock-thread-how-low-can-you-go.18999071/

Also run an offset on your CPU, you should be able to do - 20 to 30 which will again lower power use.

Regardless, you should replace the PSU. The one in your list isn't known for being good at handling transient spikes, it might be able to under the above changes but that doesn't mean it's a healthy long term solution.

As Tetras said, it shoul be 16gb not 4.

GPU-Z will show what it is.

Just get a PSU, the motherboard should be fine.

Something like this for example.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £113.99 (includes delivery: £3.99)

Cpu at 85 degrees is very toasty with this climate. Expect it to get worse as we get into summer. I would clean, re-paste and perhaps reposition your cooling setup, I would be looking at getting that temps no higher than 75 degrees.

Your system is underperforming and looks to be unstable. How old is your windows install? Before your 5080 did your system perform better?

The power supply should be fine as it can deliver 54 amps on the 12 volt rail alone, which is plenty. The fault is likely due to drivers or temperature. I’d remove the side panel and update drivers before you start buying new parts.

First remove the side panel and see if that resolves the crashes. After that update the graphics drivers, motherboard chipset and possibly the BIOS. I’d flash BIOS last as this can be complicated and isn’t without risk.

Your system is very GPU top heavy so you’re probably not getting the most out of it. It depends what resolution and settings you use as to how much of an issue that it is.

I will look into a new cooling system as the current one is still from my previous processor, most likely not suitable for the 5950x.

Windows install in Jan 2025.
I have noticed these issues since installing the 5080 yes. It does seem that the performance has gotten worse.

As others have said. Leave the rest alone first. Sort out the power supply then decide after.
I will look into getting a new PSU and see how this impacts the performance.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Would you be able to provide me with some cooling systems that would be compatible with the current set up, to give me an idea of what is suitable for a 5950x?
