So I have asked about upgrades already in another thread and decided to go SSD.
Its for my sons birthday in April and has ~£200.00 to spend.

Currently have a 1TB HDD with 120GB partition for OS.

Should I buy a 120GB SSD just for the OS
OR
250GB SSD for OS + whatever
OR
500 GB SSD for OS + Steam games - I would then only have the most commonly used games on it and the others on the HDD

OR

get a 240GB SSD for OS and whatever AND a 2TB drive for storage

My thoughts are :
240 GB SSD for OS and whatever else.
(existing) 1TB HDD with Steam and Games only
(new) 2TB HDD (WD RED ?) as 2 1TB volumes with 1 to mirror the steam HDD and the other 1TB volume for storage of anything else.

I have 120GB SSD for OS, Office suite and most little apps, with a 2TB HDD for all games (Steam, Origin, GoG, etc), plus photos, movies and some of the larger apps I use.

Works fine for me and despite the massive amount of stuff stored, I still have 40% of the HDD free.

I find it makes a big difference on some games, the load times are terrible on DA3 whilst using a HDD.

However as long as you have a fast internet connection you could manage with a 240GB and just swap out games as you play them.

I find a 256G SSD to be plenty. I have it set up so my docs/desktop/downloads go to a real HD so I don't fill up the SSD with rubbish that doesn't need the speed.

At the minute I have my OS and Steam on a 250GB SSD, my 2TB HDD is full of music and my other full of films. 250GB isn't enough for a large gaming library, I just keep a few installed that I'm playing and then uninstall when done and install the new ones, so a rotation system basically.

I have a 256GB SSD, and it's now almost full, with only a few games installed (I normally have one single player and a couple for multi-player). Currently a good deal on the Samsung 850 500GB EVO I've just ordered, taking advantage of the current exchange rate between EUR and GBP. Also plenty of deals to be had on large Crucial drives at the moment.

256gb tends to be the best value atm

I would buy one of those for your os and most played games and re use the 1tb hdd for everything else

Buy a 256GB now. By the time you need a 512GB the price will have come down and you'll probably end up having paid less for both than the current price the 512GB is listed at.

I use a 240GB EVO for OS, apps and and games I play the most and a 3TB HGST 7200rpm which has good performance although not the cheapest 3TB HDD you can get.

I'm trying to get him to upgrade to i5 4690K, should be able to do this and a 120GB SSD through selling his old set up.
ie i5 + Mobo = ~£260
120GB SSD = ~£40
I'll likely get ~£100 for his old CPU + Mobo.
He seems a little reluctant atm.
One other thing is that I plan on rewarding exam success with an i7 build so maybe just go for the 250GB SSD for now.

I use a Samsung 250GB Evo for OS and apps. I use a Samsung Spin Point F1 750GB for games off Steam.

I have 58 games and still have 300GB free.

WD Black 1TB 7,200rpm drive is my drive of choice to store all my steam games on.

I then have a 2TB green for everything else and a 256GB SSD for O/S.

I have a 256gb ssd for OS/apps/games, a 320gb spinner for libraries and a 2tb external for storage and backup.

Anything I'm not playing at the moment gets moved to the external at first then deleted if not played for a while.

I would like another 256 just for fsx though.
