Gaming Piracy

Would you care if you could only play free-to-play MMOs, casual PopCap games and flash/browser based ad supported games on the PC? And move your "hardcore" gaming to the consoles?

Depends how th consoles do, I like a keybord and mouseso if they add support for that I wouldn;t mind too much but the console would need to be at least as good or better than current pc graphics and depth.

But i think the pc will always be around as it;s cheaper to publish for, so small companies will always make decent pc games as a starting point.

Wouldn't bother me at all.

It's a brave new world. Consoles and pc's are having a stag and hen party, and the wedding night is inevitable. I'm excited by what might result.

Nobody should be lamenting the supposed/potential demise of any given platform. Save that for a nostalgia thread in 2015. Let the chips fall where they may, let go of outdated concepts like 'supporting a platform'. Technology is advancing, entertainment is evolving, and I'll be right there with it.

The only 2 things that are actually stopping me from moving from PC to Console gaming is:

1) The price of games. A new PC game can be purchased for as little as £17 whereas for a new console you are looking at£40+

2) The control system. I don't care what anyone says, playing FPS with a control is no where near as accurate and fast as using a mouse!

If these 2 issues are sorted I would be tempted to move over.

tbh all that annoys me is cd checks these days, I have a hate for cd's and dvd's...
But a crack often solves this. Haven't had any other issues with drm really, modern securom doesn't whine about daemontools ( well gta iv didn't) and registering for stuff didn't bother me too much either...

I haven't read the article yet, just the conclusion, but I don't know whether to believe it or not.

Well they make chips for the consoles to, so yeah they're ecstatic they just massively expanded their markets.

I would expect the margins on those console chips to be pretty razor thin, whereas on desktop and laptop parts they would see a greater return.

Also, would they be at the same level technologically if they didn't have all of the development going on in PC land? Each console lives through several different generations of ATI and NVidia cards.

While a valid complaint, you've blown the issue out of proportion a little. If you look around most console games at launch will be less than £35, after a short time the prices plummet, for example two days ago i bought Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, a game released less than a month ago, for £16 (first hand).

Look free to play are by and large pap, he even says "made for the lowest common denominator" is that what you look for in a game? Ok some "monies" saved but wouldn't you rather pay for your games and have a much higher quailty experience?

This really sucks, but I did suspect this as true.

Another thing is that this generation the PC technology hasen't advance that much at all, so whereas at the start of ps1/n64 generation PC's were close in terms of power, mid way through PC's trounced the consoles in power. This time technology hasn't advanced that much and PC's merely keep up with consoles most the time (offering marginal graphical improvements at others).

Valid point, it has been some time since I last purchased a Wii/360 game :D

However, the price of PC games plummets too. Console owners are always getting a shafted over the price of games!

On a different note, has the Wii been successfully hacked? I know that there is the Homebrew channel but after looking at the homebrew apps out there I just couldn't see the point! But are Wii games being actively pirated?

I always thought it was the consoles trying to keep up with the PCs? Seeing as its the PCs that are constantly being upgraded.

The Wii is very much piratable and unlike the 360 that requires you to open up the box and fiddle with the hardware, the Wii simply needs a software modification that can be applied using a certain game and a SD card. I don't know the details and even if i did i wouldn't explain them here for obvious reasons :D

Probable bad wording on my part - what I meant was - consoles are keeping up with PC's far better this generation.

Having recently visited a Wii-owning friend, I can confirm that the answer to this question is hell yes.

Was recently saying a very similar thing to a friend. There really isn't much in it anymore!

That can't be through Homebrew though can it? Or have they started releasing chips for them now? I know the DS games are very easy to copy but have heard nothing about the Wii!

As i said in my previous post, copied games can be played on the Wii without any hardware modifications now, so yes, its through homebrew. I won't go into any more detail for fear of ban hammerage :p

thanks for the info! I wont ask anything further on the subject seeing as it is rather dodgy! :D

While I was over at the guy's place, he decided he wanted to play the new Mario Kart game. Inside of about 15 minutes, the image was downloaded and burnt, and the disc was in the Wii and the game was being played in the online multiplayer mode.

I'm not sure of the actual method that allows for piracy (whether it's a physical chip or a firmware hack) as I don't own a Wii, or any other console come to that. All I can confirm is that Wii piracy, once the console has been modified in whatever fashion, seems pretty straightforward from what I saw. The guy got his isos from a site dealing specifically with Wii game torrents (I don't know its name, before anyone asks), and said torrents were very well seeded, from what I gather. He had a great big stack of pirated games (20-30, maybe more) next to his console.

I think millions and millions of other people would disagree with you there.

Until they get rid of the time sink that they are then yes they are crap. There is no pickup and play element in an mmo unlike an fps, people will say there is but having played both I disagree. And competition wise mmo's cant touch fps's.

Thought the article interesting, took best part of an hour to read, but didnt necesserely agree with all of it.

But hes right when he says that the only people making money out of piracy is the likes of Pirate Bay, and the distribution sites like Rapidshare, usenet.

Also what about PC apps? Personally ive never bought an application and probably never will, im more likely to buy a game than a copy of Nero.

He's right when he says its a very complex issue.

It appears through the article that most people really hate DRM, and there's a lot of negative talk about it on these boards aswell.

But apart from CD Keys, Online Registration and Disk Checking, I can't see anything else. In fact, i've never had a problem with it (Well, once. Battlefield 2 required an EA account (I reckon that's DRM?) and I couldn't get on, but that ended up being the firewall)

Why are so many people up in arms over something that as far as I can see, barely if at all takes up any of your time or effort?
