Hi guys, been a few years since I last built a pc, but I had a lot of help from here then! and after the same now..

I've got keyboard/monitor/mouse...

Would be nice to get a spec with windows included, and one without, mainly used for gaming and some programming as title suggests!

Thanks for any help! :D

Sorry, a lil over budget :)

Wondering if the CX would be strong enough with a stock 7850. Overlocking a 7850 significantly would probably be best with a better PSU (like the Coolermaster, or XFX Core 550 / 650).

To complete the build later, add a £25 CPU cooler (Gelid Tranquillo, Hyper 212 evo, Corsair A50), and to really make it sweet, a SSD (128GB M4). That's more of a £1000 budget, with a stronger motherboard (Asrock Z77 Extreme4).

If you want a quiet case, the Obsidian 550D is good, but over £100. The Fractal R3 is good too, and will house a 7850.

Do you have any storage drives already? An SSD would be a worthy addition if you have some already, an SSD will run short on space quickly with games.

Oh and I love the CPU water coolers, hence its on both builds, if you don't mind the sub-par one that comes with the processors then you can get money back from that. At the end of the day it depends on more specifics, and personal preference of course :D

On programming - I've found the i3's at my university quite sufficient, if a bit lacking compared to mine... but thats kind of me, not the processors :D

thanks so far guys!! forgot to mention ive got sata drives so a small-medium ssd would be great.. budgetwise i could make 800£ i reckon.. and id prefer going for an i5 i think!

thanks! one without an os looks really good.. n good point about windows 8! how is watercooling to set up? last pc i built was 4 yrs ago with standard air cooling. Also i assume thatd all fit in the case fine?

Personally I'd not get some of the things Rooster212 has specced, nothing wrong with it it would work but I think there's better choices:

Without Windows:

With OS:

What's changed?

  • No need for more expensive RAM, 1600Mhz and reasonable timings is good for SB
  • The PSU is fine, but for a similar price you can get a good 600W modular PSU [in the first spec]
  • I've included a 128GB SSD which will give you much more room for the OS and games/programmes. The Crucial M4 is know to be fast and reliable :)
  • I've got a 7850 is both specs, which is better than the 6850 and 6970 in that its newer and uses less power than the 6970 for similar performance. See this comparison. Also see this thread, they overclock well too.

Thanks beejjacobs, would the stock air cooling be enough? I probably wouldn't really want to overclock it any (or much) to begin with, but it would be nice to be able to do so at a later date

No problem :)

yes the stock cooler is fine, people have even got upto 4.2Ghz on the stock cooler! 4Ghz should be achievable. Of course a better cooler can be added later, will allow more overclocking and be quieter but I think in this instance it's better to get a larger SSD etc.. first :)

I wasn't aware when I did the spec that you could get a 560Ti 448 so cheap now, so another option is one of those + a CPU cooler:

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560Ti "448 Edition"

Gelid Tranquillo

That 560Ti 448 is a cut down 570 basically, so will perform similar to the 7850 but of course it has a very good custom cooler and is a bit cheaper!

Which way would you go if pressed? the 7850 or the 560Ti, and why does that card need a CPU cooler (I assume in this case that'd replace the stock cooler)? Been a few years since even had to buy hardware I feel like I know nothing lol

Really appreciate all the help guys :)

Sorry I added the Gelid in there, because with the cheaper GPU you can fit it in the budget - you could still stick with the stock i5 cooler to save money :)

Personally I prefer Nvidia so would go with the 560Ti 448, but the 7850 is newer/will use less power.

This compares the 7850 with the 570:

and this compares the 570 with the 560Ti 448:

[Unfortunately you can't directly compare them on there.]
