Gaming Rig Circa £1,200-£1,300

to be honest

i like the specifications pointed out above, but

I don't really see the point going for the corsair supply when there is alternatives from the likes of Antec do the job for less money, they are gold certified and arguably better units.

why not go for something of a lower power output that suits a single GPU system better.

for example
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-149-AN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1088

this is an excellent supply and in my opinion, better suited to a single gpu system than a HX850 or XFX supply.

this presents a saving that could go towards something more exciting like increased memory capacity, case mods or even a capacity increase on the SSD

the hx is 80+ silver and the psu u listed is 80+ bronze (not that it would make much diff tho) but more importantly its not modular
and my 2nd spec did spec a 750w hx ;p

16gb ram is the max for win7 home no? a 256gb sd would be sweet, but then we'd probably need to make savings from elsewhere like case and heatsink etc

I just don't understand this trend in GH of suggesting massively overspecced supplies for systems.

a power supply is arguably the most boring purchase you can make, but buying something solid from the likes of antec who have a proven track record of making solid supplies means you can spend money on other things.

he is buying a HAF, if you cant cable manage a non modular supply in that case then there is a serious problem.

in the grand scheme of things, can you tell the difference between a 80+ bronze or 80+ gold supply?

sure its a requirement if you have money to burn or want to go crazy on dual vga specifications but I just don't see the requirement for such a high end supply here or in the majority of other spec me threads recently.

i am supposed to be the guy encouraging you guys to buy things from us and should be upselling you all.

but the fact of the matter is, if you don't need it, then spend your money elsewhere.

i think its more the "if you ever do want to sli you dont have to upgrade your psu"
well that was what i was thinking when i specced it, its more of a keep your options open upgrade path
and if op didnt ever want to sli, could just drop the mobo to a d3 non-x mobo and a 550/650w psu for further savings

Over shot a little bit but ho hum.

Below is pretty much what I have in my system and it swallows up everything I throw at it.

Now for me to explain. Why and what

firstly The gene board is one of the best boards in it's price range. I would take the intel components (network/sata controller) and the user friendly bios with all the extra parts that the maximus has for overclocking over any cheaper larger form factor board with a gastly interface or horrific colour scheme. Sure it's got less pci slots but what you get is some serious well balanced kit that will allow you to extract the most from your chip. with no awkward Realtek components in site. Intel network port alone is worth £25 it's the best on the market.

d2x sound card Again for the money it's a good buy you don't have to have a sound card like you don't need a 120Hz monitor but once you do you will never use onboard again. Theres nothing wrong with the DG sound cards this one is just better and again the interface is easy to use and set up

2700K becuase it's cheap yes you could get a cheaper 2500k but tbh the extra 4 cores may come in handy over the next year or so so may aswell go for it rather than have to buy one anyway in 12-18 months time.

Evga 680 Pretty self explanatory just becuase you can push a 670 equally as hard doesn't mean the extra cash isn't worth it. the 680 makes less noise and generates less heat.

PSU 750 is the max you need I'm cutting it a bit fine with my 650 XFX pro but there is no need to get 850+ for a 1 card gaming rig.

crucial M4 becuase they just work trawl through the internet you'll see they are of the highest quality and have a very low failure rate from my experience.

Fractal Case becuase it looks sweet in the corner of your room it's easy to build in too.

Samsung memory becuase should you ever want to you can kick the balls out of it easily pushed this stuff over 2133Mhz so for the money it's performance gains are great.

Prolimatech Megahalems becuase it's one sexy looking thing that does the job 24/7

Fans becuase they too work well and look really sleek would also work well with the gene V colour scheme :

Good morning all,

After many hours of scouring threads and reading reviews, I really want to get something ordered before I drive myself mad!

I have decided the following needs to be included:-

I7 3770k processor (what would be a good cooler for it please?)
GTX 680
Samsung Green 16GB RAM
240/256GB SSD Drive
850W PSU Modular if possible (Potential SLI when my bank balance recovers)
2TB Standard storage (Seagate Barracuda?)
Blu ray writer
Windows 7 Home Premium
NZXT Phantom enthusiast case
Razer death adder mouse black edition
Razer mechanical keyboard

Please could you review the specs and fill in any gaps? I know the price is being pushed up but I want to make sure I've got all I want rather than compromising. It's not a money no object build, I have to be quite careful but I don't want any regrets either! All suggestions are much appreciated. Also, does anybody know if you can collect from OC on a Saturday? I can't wait to get started!

do you really need a 3770 or a 680, you could save some serious dough if you went 3570+670, for the 170 quid extra, IMO the performance increase is hard to justify

the 3770k has no advantages in gaming. unless you're doing a lot of photo/video editing, video transcoding, modelling and simulation, the 3570k overclocked is more than sufficient
gtx670 for the reasons i've stated in earlier posts
i've upped the ssd to 256 gb
got a ax750 instead, practically one of the best psu on the market at the moment
sidewinder x4+g500 combo is my preference, they're excellent for the price

Cool, I will stick with silver arrow heat sink. Thanks for the tip on RAM. Has the 680 gone up on here? Thought there was one for £384? Might compromise with an i5 3570 and a 680.

there is, but i was comparing like and like (both windforce 670 vs the windforce 680)
for ram, i wouldnt worry (too much) as you can see i suggested the corsair xms3, but in my spec i suggested the teamgroup. it really makes no tangible difference once you boot and play, outside of benchmarking, they're practically identical

in the end, its up to you to decide what's best for you. we can only suggest what we would go for if it was our money to spend.
if you would like the 680 and have the $$$ to spend it, then go right ahead (but i know i wouldnt ;p)
