Hi,

a mate is looking to put together a new system, he has a budget of £600.
The system is going to be primarily for gaming.

Case
PSU
Motherboard
CPU
RAM 1gb
Graphics Card
Hard Drive
Sound Card (if possible)

----Case--------------------------------------------------------------------
CoolerMaster Ammo 533 Aluminum (No PSU) - Silver (CA-089-CM)
Price: £41.95 (£49.29 Including VAT at 17.5%)
----Motherboard-CPU-RAM-----------------------------------------------------------------
Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6300 1.86GHz Retail / Gigabyte 965P DS3 / 1GB GeIL PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle (BU-036-OK)
Price: £298.97 (£351.29 Including VAT at 17.5%)
----HardDrive--------------------------------------------------------------------
Western Digital Raptor 36GB WD360ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-095-WD)
Price: £66.95 (£78.67 Including VAT at 17.5%)
----PSU--------------------------------------------------------------------
Akasa Ultra Quiet 460W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel (CA-003-AK)
Price: £44.99 (£52.86 Including VAT at 17.5%)
----GPU--------------------------------------------------------------------
BFG GeForce 7900 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-033-BG)
Price: £129.99 (£152.74 Including VAT at 17.5%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Total £684.85

Slightly over budget, but thats my attempt, which doesn't include delivery.
He already has an IDE HD for storgae, so I thought the Raptor would be good for gaming, I know it is only 35gb but should be ample for his requirements.
If there are cheaper drives which aoffer reasonable performance then suggestions would be greatly accepted. Is all this going to work and is it the best he could get for his money? He could use his current HD and upgrade at a later date to keep the costs down. Therefore the money saved could go towards alternative bits and bob. ie better bundle or something. Could anyoneput together a better spec for me or is this ok?

Cheers

It's worth bearing in mind that the 74Gb Raptors are considerably faster as well as having more storage. I know it's more money, but worth thinking about....

I'd opt for a Hiper PSU - I think they're better value than the Akasa.

Looks pretty good otherwise :)

If it was me i would change the GPU for a Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO)

and the case for a Antec Super LANBOY Aluminum Super Mini Tower Case - No PSU (CA-012-AN)
I think the X1800XT is faster than the 7900 GS and the lanboy is a better looking case and very cheap imo

Yeh get a lanboy, cant go wrong for £35!! dont get a raptor if you bugdet is £600, you would be better off getting a 40gb or 80gb barracuda at half the price.

U will only need a 400w/450w psu, so no need to spend extra on a hiper. Just make sure u get a decent brand EG seasonic, tagan!

As for the graphics, if u wanna 1800xt, dont bother. just buy the 1800 xl and flash it to a xt!! save urself £50, if your up to the job that is!! ;)

Also dont get the bundle, u dont save any money and u get a rubbish hsf with the retail 6300!

Thanks for all your input guys. I will send him the Spec and see what he thinks. I presume 48 quid over budget is acceptable for the system he is getting.
I was lookibng at the Lanboy too, it does look like a nice case for the money.
I'm sure he will be well pleased.

Cheers Guys, much appreciated

"Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler" Dont think there is any need for that, the stock coolers are meant to be pretty dang good!

Nevermind that it won't fit either :) You need the Arctic Freezer 7 or similar for socket 775 or alternatively just buy a retail chip like you suggest.

You could just get PC5300 to save a bit of cash and maybe a cheaper(although not as good clocking) motherboard also.
