Gaming Router?

Hello eveyone!

I know tons about computers but when it comes to networks I'm an idiot!

I want to buy a gaming router. The simple fact is that I have never really used QOS because I have too many games and can't be bothered to set it up for all of them. So I want something really simple to configure.

I have Killer on my gaming PC. I really like the simplicity and the way I can prioritise stuff with one click of a button. I don't care if its no better than the intel, it's easy and informative and the intel is not. I would like to extend that simplicity to a router, hence why I want a gaming router. The Wifi is actually secondary since most of my stuff is wired.

I have looked at three models. The Linksys WRT32X, the Netgear XR500, and the Asus RT-AC88U.

The Linksys is probably ideal for what I want, but there seems to be a lot of negative reviews concerning dropped connections.

The Netgear seems to be great but the main gaming feature, Geo Location, is pretty useless to me, I don't play that type of game. And I am not sure the Netgear makes QOS any simpler than any other router. Anti-bufferbloat seems useful but I'm not really sure of it's worth.

The Asus seems good with some gaming oriented stuff but again the QOS I am not sure is any simpler than any other router.

I am stuck. I would get the Linksys but the negative reviews are holding me back. I was hoping that someone here may have some of these routers and could offer some wise words! Please, don't tell me not to buy a gaming router, it's too late for that. Lol. I'm not going to start again with the research! :/

if you want the best connection then you have to go wired and use Ethernet directly into the router.

wi-fi is always going to increase ping especially travelling through walls.

not sure how good the ones you have listed are but i use a Draytek 2860ac and its a brilliant router!

Thank youy for the suggestion. I already have a Draytek 2860, and while its extremely reliable, it's got an extremely confusing interface.

What do you expect this 'gaming' router to do for you that any other decent router wouldn't? Mainly marketing BS IMO.

They offer simplicity for people who don't really understand networking. The Killer NIC in my PC, for example, I can bring up the control panel and in an instant see what the priority of an application is, and change it with one click of a button. I need that level of simplicity in the router too, becuase otherwise I just won't bother using it. I am not really expecting a gaming router to improve anything other than usability. I must confess its a bit of a ripoff to charge more for a gaming router becuase often they have simplified interfaces ( especially in the case of the Linksys WRT32X ), but that's life. It's a bit like healthy food. Fewer additivies somehow makes it more expensive! To me it's actually worth more money to make the router more user friendly. If that wasn't the case I would stick with the 2860.

I don't use wifi really. Only for some printers and stuff. Gaming PC's are hardwired. I know I am paying for stuff I won't really use, but I am not really worried about that.

Anyway! I bought the XR500 today. Simple fact is that people seem to be raving about DumaOS. The router is way over-priced, considering its pretty old hardware, I mean I reckon just I paid £80 just for DumaOS. But whatever. I really would have gone for the much cheaper Linksys WRT32X except there are just too many negative reports about it. I have no idea whether the disconnection problems have been sorted with the router, perhaps they have, that's why I asked on the forum, but whatever, too late now. The Linksys is nice and simple and suits my existing hardware, it would have been great, had they not had severe problems around launch. The Asus, RT-AC88U, well, unfortunately I am dubious about the benefits of WTFast and if you take that away from the Asus you have a QOS setup that seems just not as good as the Netgear XR500. The Netgear, people have nothing bad to say about that apart from the fact it's over-priced, which I am not really worried about.

Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite.
Spend hours digging through the UBNT forums on how to employ QoS properly or use the GUI to enable smart queues and be done with it, can't get much easier than a check box and entering your up/down speeds.
