I have around £600-750 to blow, and cannot think of anything to spend it on. So i thought i'de research servers.. from what i can read..i am totally clueless. I don't really care about the cost, but the server would be used for hosting PC and 360 multiplayer games online, and will hold some LAN events at my house with my friends.

I don't know wether or not a server is need for the above ^^ or should i just get a skulltrail motherboard and put 2 Quad Cores into my current computer, and get dual raptors or something?

And if a server would be suitable for the above ^^ can anyone spec me one up?

Thanks in advance

Ben

Running a 'gaming server' isn't all about the hardware, what sort of home connection do you have? there are going to be limits to the amount of concurrent users based on it.

A cheap dual core, 4GB, XP/Vista64 will work fine. You dont have to spend a fortune.

You can probably do all what you wonna do with your current pc.

Also, i will try and get it set-up as a dedicated server using one of them companies and from there i can rent it out, so i guess it needs to be quite good :)

a good bandwidth connection and decent server hardware like 2x opteron 1212 and a tyan motherboard and at lease 8 gig of ECC registered memory, id recommend linux base server O/S or windows server 64bit O/S

Why do you want to go through all that bother? You're going to need someone to manage the server for you as if something goes wrong are you available to go and fix it at the drop of the hat as you're customer will expect it.
