Gaming spec needed - 1.5 to 2k

Hi All,
I stopped by here roughly 2 years ago for advice on building my current pc and had a great response and thought I'd give it another whirl.

I'm looking to put together a new computer primarily for gaming with a max budget of 2k (I already have a nice 24" monitor so that doesn't need to be included). Any suggestions for the spec or parts I need to make a kickass system?

1.5K - 2K is LOADS of cash with today's component prices! You can get 2 gaming grade PCs for that!

Do you want to go up the "double graphics cards" SLI/Crossfire route to ***** the extra cash?
 
I'm happy to fit in dual cards if the performance is worth it. I have that money allocated for the machine and i'm not really interested in overclocking the components. Of course if it comes in way under budget thats ok, I just wanted to state my maximum top spend for it.
 
Ive left peripherals to you and OS, you could also add anything else you want to the spec.

i'd go with most of Red's spec but drop the 8500 to the 8400 processor and up the memory to the G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PQ PC2-8000C5 (2x2GB), will give you an extra bit of room if you decide to overclock at a reasonable increase in price.

i'd also swap the ide dvd for a sata one, i'm happy with my Samsung SH-S203D 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter.
