If you happen to have access to power sockets in the right places, Powerline Adapters are the "in thing" and extremely effective. It depends on the electrical wiring of the house, but it works for most people.

And not having to wear your tin foil hat to protect your brain from wireless signals will make those around you happier.

Well I'm not going to get my hopes up about those. The electrics in my house are useless as it is, my power socket just about bloody works. Tin foil hat back on. Thanks anyway though :)

Well, for what its worth, my second-favourites are the USB adapters with cables, which provide flexibility when choosing a good spot for the antenna. When my body has been between the antennas and the modem, I've noticed drops in speed and connection, till I move my body out of the way. Weird but there you go. So I like that freedom to move the antenna about. Also easier to remove and plug into another computer, if necessary.

And then there's the PCI-E network cards, which are tidier (no cables) and tend to have strong reception, although reception will also depend on the location of the (immovable) antennas.

I can't think of any other options?

I think you'll be fine with whatever you go for, being only one floor up.
