So we've just moved into a house where there is a double sized garage with two up and over 7 foot garage doors that I wish to convert to one large door, there is a central brick pillar between the doors that is supporting two RSJ's.
Anyone with any idea on cost to get a builder, or a specialist garage door company, to do this?
Cheers...

Is the garage integral? Are the RSJ’s supporting the front elevation of the house above? If so, it’s quite a job and likely to be an expensive one to get a steel to span the entire width - if not, then it will certainly be possible but you will need to employ a general builder to do the dirty work - garage door companies just want the space to fit the door. Novoferm doors are what I eventually settled on - but we converted one half of a double garage and so just needed a single electric roller door - which is superb

Thanks for the reply, no its completely separate construction from the house within the rear garden.
@Coran just want to be able to park ours car in it and work my detailing magic. With the doors being only 7 feet wide there is only 26mm to spare each side of my car. A tad tight.

Cost all depends on what type and make of door plus if you want windows in the door panels

Also you will need an electrician to install a supply for the door

Door companies won't in general do any structural work you will need to get a builder in

Thanks, the garage already has a power supply, nope just a plain door will do and I'm happy to install a electric conversion myself. There are companies that actually specialise in this type of two singles to double conversion and I might get a quote from one of them and a local builder to compare.

Would be interesting to see what you get quoted

Roller doors are amazing, way better than up and over. I've got an 2x un powered rollers and love them, takes about 2 seconds to put it up or down, really glad i didn't get an electric one as they seem to take forever compared.

My neighbour has an electric roller garage door. Not sure how much it cost him. I can confirm, it's dog slow. Not sure how good the security would be on it either. It feels like I could put a sledge hammer through it with one blow, but.. then I saw this...

I think the thing to remember with electric vs manual is the speed often isn't an issue. No one with an electric door goes out to it then presses to open it. The advantage is being able to open it before you get it, which if you use it for your car is such a huge bonus, particularly when you arrive back home and just drive straight in!

Actually I do. The bike sits behind it, used daily, as do the lawnmower and garden tools used weekly. The electric shutter door was fitted before we bought this house otherwise we would have had an unpowered on as all the previous ones we have owned.

However the twenty seconds or so are not an ordeal to wait on. Life's not too short.

Yes electric shutter door that I will link to Alexa so I can say 'open sesame' in my car when I get into the driveway.

Yep electric roller doors are brilliant - ours is plenty fast enough. I just press the remote in my house and by the time I’m outside it’s open. It’s brilliant and so SO much better than my old up and over thing - it’s the space they save which is huge also
