Gas and Electricty prices

Paying 160 a month for both at the moment 3 bed house, but I put up the amount by 40 voluntarily as there estimates of 120 were leaving a shortfall every month and racked up hundreds of money owed

Never pay by dd your lining the their pockets.
10,000,000 customers £100 in credit that's interest on 1000,000,000 they are getting for nowt.

I put £200 a month in to a savings account and just pay online as bills come in. Before the internet and online banking dd made sense for those that worked but not now. At end of year whatever is left over goes towards by beer at Xmas :)

You're right in principle, but you will pay higher rates if you don't pay by monthly direct debit.

The key is submitted a meter reading each month so the direct debit is based on usage and not estimated.

Made a thread other day about utility costs,

I'm with EDF and they are robbing us blind... I'm gonna submit accurate meter readings each month to see what I should only be paying... none of this dd ******** with credit.

But yeah we're all getting raped.... pure and simple.

Yeah there's def something not right, like I said same house for around 5 years, unit prices not varied much but now they want £125 a month, when I've always paid £80 and been in credit..

Our gas/electric for a small semi detached 3 bed house was apparently £900 this quarter.

FUUUUUUU!

My latest bill for this quarter was 17p, which they then revised to £63.91, which they then revised yet again this morning to £23.91 in credit, & thats all from the same meter reading they took, i'm going to be on the phone to NPower first thing Monday morning to find out what the hell i actually do owe, as i really don't want to get caught out by a big bill later down the line courtesy of those incompetant cretins.

We pay £53 a month for gas and electric. It started at £63 then went down to £48 but the long winter kicked it up again. We live in a small 2 bed end terrace and our fixed term is coming up so off to uswitch I go.

I find it very difficult to compare because i've been lazy taking meter readers. I will set a reminder to do it once a month from now on.

Hmmmm I was moaning about my bill of £200 for both for a quarter over winter.

One thing I do know - certain energy providers are naff (NPower) and certain ones are good (Eon) and certain ones are slightly better prices (Scottish Power) but we'll see....

ive just been onto british gas, the quality of the phone call is shocking, i can barley hear the guy and it is constantly breaking up.

right pain to sort anything.

anyone else find this?

Just becuase your DD does not mean you are paying more DD payments and bill general dont relate to each other, unless you're on variable DE.

Has you usage/price per unit gone up.

And for the love of God don't use Uswitch, spend a bit of time and use excel. And bring up your old bills and try and get monthly usage figures as these can change prices drastically, depending how its structured.
It's how some are always at the top of comparison sites, then you get stung for massive bills. Comparison sites aren't smart enough. One give you huge amounts oof cheap units in the summer when you don't use it, and virtually no cheap units in the winter month when you use loads. Comparison sites don't take this into account so works it out at the cheap price. Saying you'll save a few hundread and end up paying several hundread more.

My flat is all electric and I have just worked out I'm paying £100 a month for my electricity. Ridiculous. Its a 2 bed 2 bath flat with an electric boiler that keeps a tank of constant hot water, but is supposed to heat up according to an economy 7 plan, which I'm on.
Theres something not right here but I'm not sure what to do. I'm going to change to nPower as they can save me £130 a year, but also thinking of getting some kind of meter to show me how much electricity I'm using, and whats using the most.

Stopped bad habits & invested wisely

I've had to take my energy usage much more seriously over the past couple of months.. Especially in terms of water & electricity. All sockets are switched off, stopped charging my phone overnight (it doesn't need to charge that long), having military showers and loads of other little habits we've changed at home. We got a heat pump installed in May- we haven't had to use much gas as of yet, but we know it's gonna save us a bunch of cash. Check out this infographic on heat pumps- I'd highly recommend especially for long-term savings (prices only going up!)

Economy 7 is awful. The overnight rate is good, but in compensation the normal rate is more expensive than non-E7 prices.

My first house was E7 with storage heaters, NEVER AGAIN.

I dont really have a choice as our boiler works on E7 tarriffs (heats the water up during the evening), plus we aren't at home during the day so it makes sense there.

That relay depends on when you use the power, what set up you have and if you are any good at managing.
A storage tank and storage heater with sensab management, e7 is great.
For modern set up of on call boilers, then it's rubbish.
