Gas BBQ propane regulator scam?

To keep it short and simple:

Today my father bought a new gas BBQ. It runs using propane gas only. The propane gas regulator that came with the BBQ does not fit propane gas cylinders (propane cylinder valves have female connections. The regulator we got with the BBQ had a female connection too). We had to buy a separate regulator that has a male connection.

The person at the store where we got a full gas cylinder from told us that the manufacturers of the regulators purposefully issued these female propane regulators to the BBQ manufacturers so that when people buy a new BBQ they also have to spend more money on getting a male propane regulator.

Is this a scam of some sorts? The manufacturer is clearly selling a product that is not compatible with any gas cylinders available.

Cut it off and fit a standard one then

We did as stated in the OP but therein lies the issue. People forking out money for a gas BBQ should not have to spend more money on an additional regulator because the manufacturer decided to use regulators that are not compatible with propane gas cylinders, even though the gas BBQ is only intended to be used with said gas.

If you get it, you get it, and will agree.

Otherwise, carry on :P

Another thing that catch people out, is propane regulators were a different size to butane regulators, which means it's not possible to connect to a propane bottle using a butane regulator or vice versa.

EDIT: Some gas bbq come with a 27mm regulator, which only fits a Patio gas bottle (Green) or Propane bottle (Red).
Seen a number of people around here with new bbq's cutting off regulators, because the won't fit their Butane bottles (Blue) they have.:D

P:S: Why ain't this in Home & Garden.

It was probably fitted with an easy connect patio gas connection. Patio gas is standard propane that had an easy fit regulator. And yes it is a con As patio gas is far more expensive than a standard propane bottle.
