Do these heat the charcoal up as opposed to firelighters etc or do they heat a hotplate on which the food goes directly, i have experience like mose of doing a normal bbq but am looking into a gas one and dont really know how they work. Also how much is the gas for them is there a difference bewteen Patio Gas and normal blue gas bottles, i assume its just the size of the metal canister? How much are they to refill and how long do they last.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's not a BBQ it's cooking outside.

Err....Isn't a BBQ cooking outside then? :p

Agree with the sentiment though. They heat up coals that don't burn basically.

Burnsy

 I have one thats brilliant, when the fat spits you get flames and everything just like a real bbq, in a lot of ways its actually better because you can turn down the heat to avoid cremating your steaks.

You can with normal bbq's just pour sand on the coals :p Bit hit and miss control wise but it'll do the trick.

once the fat and other crap off the food has matured enough on the lava coals it tastes the same as a coal bbq.

Exactly but your wasting you fingers trying to educate people on what gives a BBQ flavour. ;)

They taste exactley the same as coal bbq just with less mess and effort, i have been known to barbeque myself a burger for lunch because its so easy!!!

No it doesn't. Having used both extensively, the food from the gas BBQ might has well have been cooked inside on the cooker. There is no charcoal flavouring as there is no charcoal.

A proper BBQ requires a charcoal fire.
