Gas Bill !!

uswitch.com :) saved an absolute fortune.

I've tried that but ot worked out how to put he figures in if your paying duel fuel it doesn't seem to give a option where you can put 50 a month in it. Instead it always says how much gas and how much Electricity you pay each month.

Best thing to do is take a meter reading now, then take another one same time next week, give your reading to Npower and then you can show them how much fuel you are using per week, or month by the weekly reading x 4 weeks ;)

Thats an idea thank you i'll do that .

Is it just me or every time I also switch suppliers, the first bills are more expensive than the others? Well, not to the extent of 200 pounds per month but still something seem wrong even when I have given a reading.

Yeah i was shocked when i seen ours. I was sure it must bewrong and rang them up but it did seem to work out right.

One thing that did puzzle me though:-

I'm on economy 7 well i said to the powergen guy i was speaking to about this and they said they don't count that on my bill because we us something like 88% of energy during the day and only 12% at night so it would mean if we used economy 7at night the daytime rate would go up, or something to that effect he lost me to be honest.

Anyone know about this??

Thanks.

I wish my gas bill was that low :(

Currently I am paying USD 1000 - 1100 per month in winter months. Luckily I am on a budget plan and I pay about USD400/month year round.

One day it can be mid 70s down to mid 50s next day it can be mid 40s down to mid 20s. The weather is crazy!!

Admittedly we do have a big house which does not help.

Here is an article from the local paper about it last year. Jessica is my wife :)

I've been on a capped tariff with Scottish Power for the last 3 years or so but that finished at the end of december so I'm looking forward to a 50% jump in gas prices. :(
Given that I expect to be paying ~ £50 pm during winter to heat my house (5 apt terrace), provide hot water & cook .
Heating only goes on at 15C & goes off at 20C & even then only during certain hours, TRVs on all rads etc..

Dunc, that is absolutely outrageous!! I live in a VERY much colder climate than you, and my house has the insulation of an outhouse, and I've NEVER paid that much for heat. Neither has my neighbor, and he's got a rather large house.

I mean, it's -12C out right now (10F) and there's no way in hell I'd be paying that much for heating.

Last winter it was pretty cold up here (average of about -10F for 5 months) and we were on all electric heating and the most we paid was $560 for a month!!

Do you live in town or out in the sticks like me? If you're out in the country, I might suggest locating a Woodmaster or Central Boiler sales rep in your area. For 4 or 5 months of your current heating costs you could have an AFS-1100 or AFS-900 installed and fueled for the winter!! The 1100 would also cover heating your garage or the hot water heater as it has two outputs instead of the single on the 900.

The advantage of these is that you take out the gas burner assembly in your current furnace and put a hot water heat exchanger (radiator) in its place. Then your current furnace runs like normal. The biggest obstacle is running the pex tubing (the water lines) from the burner outside to your furnace inside. Once you overcome that, it's easy to hook it up. You can also have them install radiant in-floor heating and leave your existing furnace alone. Or you can run hot water base board heaters as well. There's MANY possibilities and ways you can use an outdoor boiler.

Seriously, check your local laws about outdoor boiler heaters and see if you can install one. I put a 4400 series wood burner outside my place and my heating costs have gone down to $40-$80 a month for cut and split firewood. Next year it'll go down to nothing as I'll be cutting and splitting my own wood out of my back yard. I didn't know well enough in advance for this year if I was going to get the boiler or not, so I didn't have any firewood cut. Learned my lesson there, though.

Of course, this is all dependant on whether you're renting or own your house. If you're renting, I think you're kinda screwed. :(

I guess I should elaborate on why it is so high ;)

We have an old (1875 - old in US terms :p ) house of about 4500sq ft with 14 ft ceilings downstairs, and 12ft ceilings upstairs. There is no insulation in the walls or under the floor. There is insulation in the attic.

The house is heated by a mavity radiator system with a 70000 BTU boiler in the basement which is probably 30 years old. That sucker can eat some gas

The good news is that the house is very economic to cool in the summer. Our highest electricity bill for 1 month in the summer is about USD250.

Our plan is to insulate the house, and change the heating system when we have the money. We have 4 fireplace which I need to get functioning and start burning wood.

I do like the idea of wood burning system. However, I do live in-town (historic district) so would have to check the regs.

Thanks for your advice Mickey_D. I am glad that I do not have this house in Minnesota  I did live in Chicago for 2 years and know how cold it can get up there.

If you've got a boiler in the basement, it might behoove you to contact Woodmaster directly. They also do an indoor version of thier products. That's one way to get around the "No outdoor burning" regulations.

You could install an 1100 corn burner in the basement and have it tied into the existing boiler system. That way your existing system is there for backup in case you run out of corn or something goes wrong with the burner itself.

Your are correct that insulating will make for MUCH better heating more than a new heater will. Conservation is ALWAYS 10 times better.....
