Just wanna quickly run my recent gas bill by you OcUK'ers.

It just came through at a whopping price of £370 for 5 months. Our house has a gas boiler for central heating and hot water and gas hob. The central heating was on for 4 hours a day over winter and our boiler only heats hot water when you use it.

Thing is our gas meter comfirms the bills numbers, our boiler has been playing up over past few months, losing pressure etc and leaking water at one point when the pressue increased a lot, can the boiler have leaked gas leading to our large bill?

Can't see how £74 a month for gas is anywhere near right for 5 ppl.

Ours is about £85 / month if averaged out over the year

but, our relatively large house has 2 boilers and a large Gas Range hob

First of all, its pretty high tbh but how well insulated is your house ie have you got double glazing??. Since i put in double glazing in my house last yr, my bills have fallen dramatically...before the double glazing i was getting £300 every quarter for my gas bills...so far since the installation of double glazing my gas bills have been about £150 a quarter and my house isnt in the best shape.

Also if you feel the boiler is playing up, perhaps get someone in..pref corgi registered to have a look at it. Also it may need replacing but thats dependant on how old the boiler is. If its losing pressure then it might need to be replaced.

Thats only around £12 per month, per person - not excessive at all really.

The boiler won't have leaked gas I doubt - when losing pressure it will be constantly reheating to regain the pressure I presume.

You should get your boiler seen to immediately, it could be dangerous.

$28/mo for 2 in a 2 bed flat with a new boiler and on a cheaper than thou energy plan. Sounds alright to me.

Might be worth checking out the boiler. Also might be worthwhile changing supplier. We was with British Gas and ours was £300 for one quarter. We changed to EDF and now we pay about £150 a quarter (over the winter months). And that was after EDF put their prices up.

British Gas kept phoning us back up trying to convince us to go back with them. I told them we was EDF now, and they kept quoting us prices that was still more expensive! One had the cheek to say "yes, but do you get the same customer service from EDF".

Personally I feel sorry for those people who bought into that price protection scheme where you got your price of gas fixed until 2008. Must sting to hear about the 2nd price cut whilst your still paying those high prices. Ouch.

we lowered our thermostat as low as it would go and still produce steaming water from the taps, dropped our prepay meter down to ~£5 a week for 3 of us in a large 3bed terrace, £1 of that is on standard charges.

Aye, we had a £1200 bill for six people over a period of three months, now that's a lot! Of course, it has to do with leftover from previous tenants that did not pay up, so their bills came and bit us!

Call the energy company you get your gas from, tell them what you told us, they are usually helpful :)

Our last gas bill came to £420. And that was with two of us in the house, an exact reading and keeping our eye on the timer all the time. Oh, and it has just been checked by CORGI and it's fine.

Paying off those winter months is expensive.

There's nothing wrong with your boiler - just pay it :p
