Gas leak?

Every so often you can smell gas as you walk past my gas supply meter box, had them come out to check it but apparantly that happens from time to time and it isn't dangerous. Better safe than sorry though.

Got a guy coming around later. They normally do it within the hour but I'm going out (for some fresh air!). It's free too.

If you called 0800111999 and told them that you have a "gas escape" or you have a "smell" the engineer will be there within 1hr (2hrs if youve turned your meter off and the smell has gone with doing so) regardless of if your going to be in or not - you cannot plan a visit for when your going to be in. If your not in when they call they will leave a card and visit a further 3times at around 2hr intervals until they gain access or you ring and arrange access. If after a total of 4 visits and no access is gained and they are satisfied with the safety checks they are able to carry out the job is closed. The engineers may however get "gas readings" and they will maked a "forced entry" into your house to make the "gas escape" safe so i would strongly advise that if your going to report a "gas escape" that you dont go out.

OcUK forums at their best.

Possible smell of gas in the home - I know, I'll go online and post about it.

Lmao my thoughts exactly!

You smell gas and yet you run to the internet, ill be running to the gas and electricity mains and switching both off, whilst on the phone to the gas company.

I wouldn't have a clue what to do with a gas leak had I not read this thread. Does anyone else think stuff like this should be taught in school?

Saying that, I don't think I would have paid much attention :(

How do you know that it wasn't taught if you're assuming you wouldn't be paying attention... hmmm??? ;):p

It was taught at my school  .

Gave us little fridge magnets with the phone number on and everything.

Natural Gas doesn't smell of anything, the smell is added so as to make leaks detectable. Ring that number, open any doors and windows to ventilate the property and turn the mains off if you feel it's safe to do so.

Do not turn on any light switches.

Do not smoke or use a lighter or matches in the house

And Unless you're on a laptop and picking up wifi Do not waste time posting about it on the internet.
