Well, I moved into a student property (****hole) and the spark switch on the gas cooker doesn't work! Me and another go down, and they tell us to buy a manual gas sparker thingy and to use that, now that's fine, buuuut how do I manually light the gas oven?

I don't fancy pulling my arm out covered in flames. Besides, the sparker has no gas in it, and only pushes out a tiny little spark so we have to hold it right next to the gas on the hobs.

Have you tried changing the battery (yes an oven usually has a battery) which makes the spark go?
There will be a panel somewhere, usually right near the floor, which will pop off and you can change the battery. Usually a C size one.
:)

I've just moved into a place with a gas oven too. But luckily I know the simple answers of how to light a gas oven.

Also why would the sparker have gas in it?

tbh, manually lighting an oven can be a bit tricky, especially on a modern one as you normally have a 'protector plate' at the rear. A match or a gas lighter will be easier then a 'spark' hob lighter.

ERM?...

simply turn on the gas... then stick your arm in... spark it.. and light it.

its not exactly going to burn your arm , or make your house explode.

Christs sake, this should be a babysitters forum.

Thanks for the intelligent replies. That's Overclockers UK for you.

I've actually never used a gas cooker before, only electric so I sought advice instead of doing something stupid in my ignorance. Unfortunately, unlike the rest of you, I wasn't born with knowledge of gas cooker usage already installed.

I managed to get the hang of it, many thanks.

Well it operates on the same principle as the hob... it has injectors that let gas out to burn (but obviously the oven works on a thermostat).

You simply turn on the gas.. and hold the igniter in the back of the oven where the burner is.

Your hand held sparker is only doing what the ignition in the oven does anyway. so theres no risk. unless you let the gas fill the kitchen before you start sparking.

but i imagine you would twig on by that point
