We (that is, me and the girlfriend) are looking to move into a new flat within the next couple of months and we're trying to figure out a rough estimate of running cost for our new place.

We're looking at a flat on Saturday which has an electric storage heater, and our current place has a gas immersion heater (and to be honest, I'm clueless as to the difference or what that means). Now, we realise that eletric heating is inheirantly more expensive to run but I guess we're just wondering how much more expensive. Does anyone have any experience from a similar situation?

I would say we're probably average users of the heating; it'll come on during the winter and very rarely during summer. The flat we're going into is a fairly spacious 1 bedroom with double-glazing, if that helps.

My boyfriend and I have just bought a new apartment from george Wimpey and we will have electric heating as well. From what I have been told its slightly more expensive to run although in a newly built flat you can bear in mind that its double glazing and they are usually economical. Im a bit like you though its our first place and really quite clueless as to how much everything will cost.

Ive roughly estimated about £20/mth water and £40-60/mth for electric, but I am not sure if this is too little really or maybe an over estimation. Good luck with the new flat, hope your as excited as we are! :p

your water estimate should be ok but I would think youe electricity one could be quite a bit short ( well,at least at the higher end of your estimates )

I have a 4 yr old semi detached 3 bedroom house, only moi lives in it and i was last year during the winter paying around £90 per month for electric as I have electric storage heaters, and electric hot water tank. Only Gas in my home is the cooker top and the bill each quarter is give or take £0.08 - £0.20p. YES you read that correctly,. must cost them more to send out the bill.

on another note, if anyone knows any prettier storage heaters (i want to change the one in the lounge when i decorate) let me know please.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think it sounds as though it won't be too much more than what we pay for gas, especially considering it's a small place with double-glazing. I think the other half was worried about it being much more expensive, but I think between the two of us we could probably handle it.

When i had a 1 bedroomed flat i used about £110 a quarter of electricity, you can expect that to be around £160 for yourselves now. the flat was All electric with those horrid storage heaters.
