Gate latch advice

I see what you mean. It's probably a bit too much effort to be honest.
If I turn the gate around it would look a bit weird from the street side as you'd be looking at the rear of the gate. If I kept the gate the same orientation and swapped the hinge and handle I'd have to fill the handle holes, sand them and paint again. I'm looking for a simple solution I think.

Cut out a small rectangular piece of wood and attach it in front of the existing cut off latch.

The door won't be able to open without lifting the latch, and when it closed the small ramp should hopefully be enough to raise it.

Bonus points for making it out of something more substantial like plastic or metal so that it both stands up to a bit of abuse and lets the latch glide past.
