gateway = router.

You don't need both.

If you want to set up a Windows Server box as a router/gateway then at the very least you are going to require Server 2003/2008 licensing, the knowledge to configure RRAS, and potentially an ISA/ForefrontTMG license and associated knowledge.

Probably cheaper (and easier) to set up a smoothwall or similar, or go the hardware route and get a cheap used Cisco Pix. But again, if you are asking the question, I doubt you have the knowledge to configure one.

hi
i have a spare server and was thinking of setting it up as a gateway..
do you know of any website for step by step help

regards

I might be slightly confused on this but some routers come with QoS enabled within them - could you not put a higher QoS (or whatever the term) for your IP etc or select what services (eg HTTP, P2P etc) have the higher QoS.

Early morning thinking, never my strongest point!

Maybe play about with Untangle as a bridge between your machines and router.

Think this has some form of QoS for services and based on IP

Another idea may be a Linksys WRT54GL.
Throw Tomato RAF on there and then lock everything down.
It will even let you throttle bandwith by IP or MAC to restrict a machines speed.

hi eveyone.
i have installed a fresh copy of server 2008 and wireless dongle installed and 2 nics installed for trough ports to gigabit switches.
ive been trying now for 4 days to get the server so run as a router and log everything coming and going but no look..
im needing somthing like a router running server 2008 but i cant find anything that will help me in my quest...
im pretty new to server roles and only been using server for about 6months(step by step help please). but i learn fast and want to learn
i need to use server 2008 in this project as i want to learn as much as i can about how server 2008 works and runs

Why do you want to complicate things by using windows server 2008? you could do the job with windows XP and internet connection sharing, and using wireshark to monitor the packets.

If you only want to learn about windows 2008 then I suggest doing something else because it simply isn't needed for this sort of thing.

by using server 2008 i thought of adding ftp, iis, sql and vpn.

and i love using server 2008 i want to see what else it can do. thanks for the wirshark looks interesting:cool::cool::cool:
ps

im needing to setup a ssid for the wlan part on the os
