GC07: PGR4 Intro video

Yep, it does lack soul. It was made by the numbers and seemingly without passion. I still enjoyed playing it but PGR will always be the second best racing series for me (everyone who has any taste prefers mario kart to all other racers, naturally) :)

10? Just seen autodesk's website and looks like they're naming by year now so I take it 10 is aka 2008. Looking at the new features list and it looks like they're introducing a shed load of tools which'll aid in architectural modelling which is awesome. Can't wait to get my mitts on them. Wish I could get good at maya but all my attempts have been pap compared to max :/

Yeah, it's 2008 now. The new lighting system is good (although taken from vRay), so they are really working on MentalRay which had a massive improvement in 9.

There are some good video's on Autodesks site, the new degredation for complex scenes is interesting. Could have used that with the last scene I was doing.

real time shadows is very impressive and gona come in very useful, and now I can start experimenting with mental ray again seeing as the sky portal feature made rendering super quick too, Yet to do anything intensive polygon wise but when you're doing buildings, you don't need to worry lol. Definete difference with more RAM though imo.

The tracks in PGR2 were 1,000,000 polygons each..

The last scene I was doing was a series of 4 buildings from Fountains Abbey, it came to 320,000 polygons and it was far from 'complete', it was giving all sorts of bother navigating in Perspective with Edged Faces, Wireframe would do the trick, but with that many polygons it was annoying, turning Edged Faces off helped but you can't work with it.

Of course 'O' worked, but it can be a pain. The only alternative was to work in isolation mode, but getting the view right for renders becomes a pain :p.

Each alternative had huge negatives, to go with positives. And this was on 4gb RAM :(.

Ahh, I should have said building and not buildings lol. 320,000 is an uber lot. I've probably not used that much in all my scenes combined! I have done curved walls and stuff but even that I "optimize" as much as possible. I gotten used to using layers too, so use structral elements on one, furniture on one, guide objects, lights, auxillary objects all on seperate layers. Makes it bit easier
 
Yeah, this was all structural elements. Whilst it would have been possible to detach each as a seperate object and layer them, it was easier having them all in the scene. Many of the arches etc.. were cloned anyway as they were very similar.

I'm tempted to start a new project very soon though :).
 
Forza 2 was a really good racer and more of a sim that PGR4 will be but just watching the ferrari vid it is obvious this is going to be a lot better in the graphics department than forza2 which for me was the only downside to the game , cant wait for this now and it is probably the only game that is going to wake my 360 from its deep sleep :D .
 
does that mean proche are once again not in pgr? i miss the 993gt2, ruf just doesn't give the same feel, no matter how awesome they are
 
Porche exclusivity rights are owned by someone else. The only difference if a porsche was in the game is the name.
