GCSE Importance

The importance of GCSEs are vastly overstated; and students have the fear of God put into them whenever exam time comes around. Just ensure you get enough to go into college, and jump the hurdles there and then.

Whats this thread even about? Were you hoping someone would just tell you they mean nothing so as to give you some excuse or justification for totally not trying and failing very badly?

Try your best, always, or end up living a life you regret.

If you have half a brain, not trying for your GCSEs will get you As, worked fine for me, and I'm off to Bristol University next year (provided I do well enough in my upcoming A level exams, which you do need to try for).

Previously the GCSEs a lot of people found difficult were the sciences. With the current syllabus, you're more likely to be talking about recycling Aluminium, than about the physical and chemical properties of it. They're a complete joke. Next year a similar sort of syllabus is being introduced for As and A2 levels, I pity people who are looking to study sciences at university, when such mickey mouse A levels are their platform.

P.S. My sisters got 7A*'s and 3 A's --and-- 10A*s and 1 A :o.

Ultimately if you've got a degree and further post degree training GSCEs are going to count for little but there's a much more important issue here - you've gotta beat your sisters!! Do it for your own pride and the pride of OCUK brothers everywhere!! :D

Point, but i will take a gap year, so i will have A-levels...what then?

Even if you're taking a gap year you will probably apply for university before you get your A-level grades and defer your entry for one year. You could apply at the end of your gap year but this is generally not recommended because you will need references from teachers who will help you apply and this becomes more difficult once you're out of the school system. Having a place may also put your mind at ease about what you're doing at the end of your gap year!

I intend to work along the IT/design style path.

My dream would be to own my own printing company as they make lots of money.

Anyway no i didnt want to be told oh dont bother, i was just intrigued and i didnt want to work up a stress for nothing but at the same time not make my self too relaxed.

Universities will consider them when you apply so.... they are pretty important.

Hardly, its mostly on the a-level predictions and the application submit, and then an interview if you need one.

Lets not forget just how many unis and courses there are these days, they let any old idiot into uni just to fill numbers up.

Ah man i can't beat them 10 A *s and 1 A cant do it hahah. Also my mum kinda like how i give her a break from going on about qualifications and that im one to take things as they come.

Depends if you want to go to a top uni or not.
They have to create some form of filtration process... when they see 5c's or whatever they will chuck you to the 'rejection pile' as most people going to a top uni will have top grades.

Up to you though... I'd have been ashamed if I got a C at a GCSE given just how 'easy' they are ;) even if they 'don't matter' what's the point in doing badly in them?

The catch-22 with exams is that they're crucial at the time but once you're onto the next step, they become irrelevant.

My dream would be to own my own printing company as they make lots of money.
That's not really a good reason to want to own a particular type of company. "They make lots of money" is also quite a meaningless statement. Anything will make you decent money if you're good at it ;)

Haha, no but im also interested in it and have already made money in the past at the age of 14 printing t-shirts for CSS clans.

As for C's, im not im an A grade student predicted straight A's

Also, bristol is a really really nice city BenM full of students and the downs are a great place aren't they?

Granted that 5Cs will get you a rejection without interview, but there will be no difference between 10A* and 10A.

As an example, to get an interview at Oxbridge, you basically need to have scored 3 280+s at As level. If you have scored that, GCSEs count for nothing, there would be little to no difference between 10 A* grades and 10 A grades.

Amazing city, the accomodation prospectus has just some through as well, hopefully I can get a place in the accomodation right next to the downs =]
Not to mention that the Chemistry department there is the only "Centre for excellence in teaching and learning" for chemistry, in the country =]

Oh, and I could have done better at GCSE.

Making a few T-shirts is a start...

There's a lot of competetion out there though, so you need to make sure you do the best you can. Plenty of degree's and foundation degrees in similar subjects available to you, providing you get the grades.

Yeah man, right i understand GCSEs are important till after you've done everything and got the Degree, gotcha :).

Still, this thread was never going to change what i did or do for GCSE, was just interested :D.

And it has given me a nice insight into peoples experiences.

I'm not sure about how the english system works but in scotland we call gcse's standard grades and a-level's highers.

We need to get good standard grade results before we will be accepted in to the higher class, if you don't make it you have to take something like an intermediate-2 or worse an intermediate-1.

Then to get in to good university courses you need good higher grades... so you need to get good standard grades to get your higher grades then good higher grades to get in to uni so it's all important at the time but afterwards they get forgotten about as the degree and relevant work experience is the most important

On my CV I just have the following for my GCSEs:

11 GCSEs A*-B inc:
English A*
Maths B

You might as well work as hard as you can to every qualification you can get. They're worth it, I regret getting a D in my A level Physics a lot, you don't want that regret.

meh its not all about good grades though, some unis want people with life experience and personality. Some big grade getters choke and turn into stoners when they are taken out their cottonwool wrapped existance, I know a lot of people who went to brilliant public schools from rich backgrounds with amazing grades who then choked in 1st year due to going off the rails and generally not understanding life, Im fairly sure decent universitys filter these out during the interviewing etc.
Its not all about grades, its about life experience too, so dont neglect one to focus on the other.
