GD may close for a while

Due to the declining standards in GD we are considering closing it for a while.
If that's what it takes, that's what it takes. Personally, I think it would be a shame, but .... well, maybe this post of yours, coming from you as a shot across the bows will work. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.

Bickering, insults, rule-breaking - the list goes on. It's better that you maintain standards here rather than having them imposed on you. It's in your hands ....
Is that not an argument for a bit less tolerance from the mods?

If there's rule-breaking, suspend the offenders. If people bicker, suspend both parties. If there's insults, suspend the insulter.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the mods don't do their jobs. Far from it. They're pretty much on the ball. The problem, as I see it, is that whether the perception is accurate or not, the perception is that the rules in GD are a bit slacker than they are elsewhere. Maybe that perception needs to be changed?

How about two basic classes of member - normal, and normal except GD access is denied? Or maybe that latter class can GD read but not post in it? Then, for minor GD infractions a member can be shifted to that "minus GD" class instead of suspended. Or is that not practical, or too much work?

What I guess I'm trying to say is that if we have rules, enforce them. If we don't, make the rules we need, then enforce them. As long as people understand what's permitted and what isn't, they can't moan if they get punsihed for breaking them ... or rather they can (and will) moan, but it won't be justified.

And as for the point that's been made in this thread about spam threads in GD ..... what is spam?

There's a fairly high percentage of stuff in GD that I regard as unadulterated garbage. But as they are often among the most active threads, it's pretty clear that my definition of spam doesn't agree with lots of other people's definition. So ..... how do we define spam? Or, who defines it?

I just ignore thread titles that suggest the content isn't going to interest me, and just don't bother reading it.

What I'd really like is a thread ignore list. I'd like to be able to mark a thread as 'spam', so it didn't even show up as a thread in GD to me. But I can understand why that probably isn't practical on a busy forum. I can dream, though. :)

Cant say I'm surprised.

What I (and I'm sure others) dont understand is why so many Dons have been taken off of GD. .

in reality most Don's moderate GD , I am not listed as a GD Don but probably do as much work in there as any of my "own" forums :)

I like using GD as a place to discuse the Wars in the ME and political things like that.
People here will probably say i can go to the speakers corner and discuss it though but there are reasons i wont.

In here you get different views and its not all hardcore make a novel out of a single post type posting. It a good balance of seriousness and people having a bit of a joke.
You dont need to be hierarchy to get noticed and you wont get flamed for not being perfectly correct.

I have mixed feelings about GD being closed and/or nuked. I don't post in it that much now for varying different reasons, one of which being the amount of uninteresting threads. That could be because certain members arn't here to start them, or because there are too many people willing to post any crap they find. Which ever one it is, GD has been poor recently.

I also agree with the people saying that the closure of GD may affect the quality in other sub forums. I've always thought that GD was here to help stop that happening in the other forums. Yes, I know that some spam gets into the other forums, but I can't help feeling that the closure of GD might make it worse.

As for the idea of a thread concerning A level results, I don't see that as beeing spam. I know people arn't against the idea of a well done thread, but I don't see why people can't seek advice in it as well. If people have done badly they might need to tell someone other than their friends and family. Granted some of the advice people will need might be trivial, but others may have some serious issues they need advice on.

Anyway, just in case GD is gone before then; Good luck with your A levels.

Good! lets get it back to what it used to be......a hardware enthusiast forum without all this "oooh my hamsters died" or "my gf has ran off with XYZ" it's all pointless babble.

You don't have to post "novel" length posts in SC either - I have posted a lot in SC and most of my posts are no more than a few sentences I'd say. Some people can say a lot in a few sentences, while others can waffle for several paragraphs and say little.

Um, isn't the problem
Bickering, insults, rule-breaking
rather than the fact that the posts are about lesbian grandmother's cats with one paw having trouble with their landlord who is in a relationship and wants to nail her after doing a hi5 and selling it on ebay and getting ripped off by paypal??

Its not a hardware entuiast forum, that would be general hardware.

I'd be sad to see it go and I do think that there isn't as much bickering as some people think.

I post on a few other forums (as i'm sure other regular posters do) and the attitude towards other members here is a lot better than on other forums.

But i dont like reading through posts like that, It just bores me and by the time ive done reading a post like that im so bored i just come back to GD

SC to me is to angry, political, "Correct" and boring.

Take the bickering, insults and rule-breaking out of GD, and half the problem is solved in my opinion.

Relationships advice can be very useful, you can use other people's experiences etc..
