Gearbox shuts down Duke Nukem mod

Gearbox are complete *holes they probably did not want to be made to look like the hacks that they are by a team of amateurs, what they did to Aliens CM was bordering on criminal & Borderlands 1 & 2 were massively overrated IMO the last decent game they made was Brothers in arms hells highway!

massive fail by gearbox GG

Yeah!!! To hell with those people trying to protect their intellectual property! Everything anyone creates should be public property?
The fact that they had big investments in Duke Nukem Forever (which was terrible, I know) and if this particular HD remake (certainly not a 'mod' as it's completely recreating the game in another engine, how is that a mod?) came out for free at the same time as their own official Duke game, that would be financial suicide.
It might not seem fair but it's just the reality of business.
Maybe they should have just hired these guys.

After the Duke Nukem and Colonial Marines fiascos they've already lost enough respect from there fanbase. They need to be very cautious with there PR from here on out...

not really though is it. The could have allowed it and made money from it. They've purely said no because they don't want to admit they mugged a large fan base off with an overdue and half-arsed attempt in the first place.

As someone else has said marines this game now this rework denial. Pretty much says everything you need to know about these greedy noobs. All they need to do now is release a game and charge for 4 DLCs a year then re release it every year after that with new skins and a couple of tweaks.

Why couldn't they have worked together with this mod?

This is a re-do of the original Duke Nukem, surely they could have released this alongside, or shortly after DNF, and maybe charged a small amount for it - kinda like a DLC?

Some of those screenies look awesome... I'd pay to play Duke Nukem in the Unreal 3 engine!

If they were going to release it for free why not complete it and say they were hacked and put it on torrent sites?

Drop them a line, tell them they suck, link to article and mention they suck some more

We really respect Gearbox, they do some great stuff, they do some less-great stuff as well, but it’s a great company. We would never release it without their approval,” he said.

Burning bridges is a bad idea, most of the time

They should just release it under a different name Duck Nukeme or something!
For those saying they don't get the hate it's not hard to understand they have released subpar games which they lied about (the E3 footage of Aliens which was not representative of the actual game), diverted funds from development of one game (Aliens CM) to improve their own IP (Borderlands 2) & they spent ages on Duke Nukem only for it to be an embarrassment to the original, Plus & this is just my opinion the last decent game they made was Brothers in arms hells highway.

Can't really debate it with you now mate as what you actually said was ninja edited from the quote I took.
If you don't like what a company does then don't buy what they make. Having an attitude of 'well their games are trash but I'll pirate them from now on' says that you actually still want to play their games.
I haven't bought a gearbox game since the terrible Nukem game and this remake did look very promising but as usual, business gets in the way of liberty, it might not be right but it's life and they can do what they want with their property, just as you or I could do with anything we created.

Why couldn't they have worked together with this mod?

Pride? stubbornness? AAA developers probably can't accept that a few passionate fans can do better work than them, it doesn't fit in with the "we're so good we need to ban the used market to stop us going out of busines" mantra.

+1 this is spot on, companies look at figures for piracy of their games so if you want to make a statement don't bother with a game at all rather then using poor excuses for theft/piracy.

This is going to get them a lot of unnecessary blowback, it could have gone either way, if they worked with the mod team they would have received praise, like Tripwire does when they help their modders and mappers

Well of course they wouldn't be allowed to release this

Because a company has never allowed a remake of a game before? Oh wait Black Mesa. The gearbox execs seemed to be under the impression it was a high res update, then when they realised what it was pulled the plug on it. Either way those pictures alone are 10x more impressive than anything that was in DNF, just a shame that they couldn't have worked on it together instead of just canning a few years of work.
