Gearbox shuts down Duke Nukem mod

Because a company has never allowed a remake of a game before? Oh wait Black Mesa. The gearbox execs seemed to be under the impression it was a high res update, then when they realised what it was pulled the plug on it. Either way those pictures alone are 10x more impressive than anything that was in DNF, just a shame that they couldn't have worked on it together instead of just canning a few years of work.

And how many others can you think of?

Black Mesa is different because the Half Life series has essentially been abandoned by Valve anyway so it isn't competing with any titles.

You can hardly expect them to spend millions and years developing a game and then say sure, please steal our IP and make your own one? If this time is so talented why not make their own game?

Same sort of thing as Streets of Rage Remake getting pulled by Sega, because it was actually quite good. I could have forgiven them if it had since come out on consoles as a small game officially licensed by Sega, but nope.

Fortunately I downloaded SORR before it was pulled... :p

Gearbox are complete *holes they probably did not want to be made to look like the hacks that they are by a team of amateurs, what they did to Aliens CM was bordering on criminal & Borderlands 1 & 2 were massively overrated IMO the last decent game they made was Brothers in arms hells highway!

What they did to Aliens CM, sure, but over-rated is one of those phrases that doesn't really mean much.

There's a very distinct difference in "over-rated" and "I didn't think it was worthy of the praise it received".

Sure, you're well within your rights to think people rave about it more than you think it deserves, however the difference is that people like it because they like it, claiming it's over-rated does nothing to change this.

For example, I think Borderlands 1 and 2 were/are great, they are some of my favourite games, but you can't talk smack about a developer, call them hacks and use the basis that you think too many people like a game that you don't as a valid argument.

So basically, this Duke Nukem situation and the Aliens CM thing are crap, sure. I don't understand why they'd do this.

All companies do this to protect their products, if the mod was a poor, then it would put a bad name on the product that is Duke Nukem, though i don't think that is possible when comparing the state of the current Duke Nukem forever game. :p

GearBox probably have plans to do more things with Duke Nukem in the near future, and they are just protecting their IP.

Do the people who agree with Gearbox think that Valve should have blocked the release of Black Mesa? Obviously Valve aren't quite as stupid.

So you know what's going on internally at valve to say the half life series has "essentially" been abandoned? Just because they're not talking about it doesn't mean anything. And only a fool would think they're going to leave the Half life series as it ended in episode 2.

And if gearbox were smart they would have taken on the mod team and made the mod a retail production, their reputation among gamers is about as low as snake turd after what happened with Aliens. Personally I think they were surprised with just how good it looked after the DNF fiasco and their ego's took a hit, so instead of fostering it and doing a deal to make it a future retail title that already had a few years of work in it they just put the foot down.

Don't mind him, I think he's one of the butthurt vocal minority who can't deal with the gaps in time between Half Life content.

Amusingly, anyone who says Half Life has been abandoned at Episode 2, surely can't really be a fan as actual fans know that the last Half Life game was Portal 2.

Exactly.

Different companies have different attitudes to their IP - i don't understand the rage against their stance.

Read up the page, they could have made this a retail game instead of squashing a few years of work, looked a lot better than anything that gearbox has put out in a long time.

Not surprised. Gearbox are a great example of a company prepared to do or say anything to turn a profit. I will never buy another game with their name attatched to it.

I wish them bankruptcy.

Gearbox are just morons. Hopefully they will disappear some day. Its funny how they seem scared of a small mod team coming along and producing a game mod that will out shine their own shoddy game DNF. Not to mention Colonial Marines. They took two great names, Aliens and DN only to make a complete hash of the games.

Face it Gearbox, you suck, you know you suck and didnt want this point to be highlighted by a game mod. Just hurry up and go bankrupt.

Thanks, emailed them now, absolute ******s

Just done the same, this mod could have drummed up a little hype for duke fans and made the next installment for the series be received with atleast an open reception, instead the way they've handled it has left me severely disappointed with them as a company.
