I'm in the markret for a new GFX as i'm seeing some perfomance issues with a few games like UT3 & Quakewars not running as quick as I would like. Also play TF2, COH, CS WoW, Guildwars but not Crysis yet.

I normally try and buy the top end of the line cards but have heard good things about the GT's. How much of a performance increase would i see with a 8800GT compared to my 7900GTX.?

Not really sure what to get as the prices between the GT/GTS/GTX aren't hugely different although I could get some more ram if I got a GT instead of a GTX...Cheers!:D

Short answer is it depends on what resolution you'll be using.

If you intend to play Crysis and simply want the best then at high res get the GTX, low res get the GTS. If you're gaming on 22" or lower then I think the GT is amazing bang for buck. With newer stuff coming out quite soon I'm not sure investing in a GTX would be so wise, unless it was a cheap second hand purchase.

The GT is an awesome card, which id recommend to ANYONE looking to upgrade, the new GTS even better, but imo is more for people who wanna squeeze some extra performance :).

Coming from the 7900GTX i would have thought it would be a big jump performance wise, so id deffinately go for it. Id recommend the GTX only if you were going with higher resolutions.

Im currently using the GT @ 1920x1200 and nothing seems to sweat (Except Crysis :D). Personally id just get a GT + that extra ram upgrade your wanting :).

If you don't wanna play Crisis then an 8800GT, 3870 or maybe even a 3850 would do the job just fine at 1280x1024.

Any higher than that and the GTS (G92 512 version) would start to make more sense.

When playing UT3 i sometimes get jumping frame rates, like its freezing for maybe half a second. i think it might be due to the processor, as i believe UT3 is a quad core game. My 8800GT runs crysis on very high at 1280x1024 very smoothly, not tried any higher resolutions yet though.

That might be a driver related bug, i know on some maps (Torlan, or that portal Deathmatch map) it would freeze, up to 5/10 seconds. Nvidia's latest beta driver sorts that out (if thats what it is of course ;)).

Cheers all

Well I run all my games at 1680 x 1050 otherwise my Nec 20Wgx2 gives me an annoying message. Also use 2aa 2af, I will probably go for the GT if its going to be a big improvement to what i've got alread and get 4gb of ram & Vista. I've not got Crysis yet, I may even wait until June to play it if it is killing top end pc's at the moment.

I always do an upgrade every June (Summer Bonus) so depending what cards Nvida/ATI have then, I will buy the top ender and replace my Black Widow Case and possibly go Quad Core

LOL, I never new that was there, my manual went back in the box and down the garage.

I've had it 14 months too :]

I have to disagree

running crysis, all settings high, at 1280 x 1024 is sound on my 8800gt (700/1750/1900) ok, for max settings then your screwed, but thats true for almost all GPU's and the very badly coded crysis.

Bang for buck, and considering new tech is round the corner go for the GT and save a few ££

It won't be your processor, there aren't any games on the market that NEED quad core, the only one i know of that has visible benefits of quad is supreme commander (but that runs perfectly fine on a dual core unless you want to play the largest maps with 4 + cpu opponents).

You definitely could play Crysis on an 8800gt with reasonably good settings I guess but it's touch and go in some parts of the game. I agree 8800gt is probably the best choice, though.

I was just trying to say you wouldn't wanna stretch any more to a GTS/GTX/3870X2 for example, since Crysis and higher resolutions would be the only instances where he would see real world benefits outside of benchmarks.

And yeah, Crysis rapes every card out there at the mo, so even then you'd only see small incremental improvements.

Im having no problems playing Crysis @ High on any resolution (even 1920x1200, its still playable) but i lower the res to 1440x900, so it looks and plays great :).

Personally I dont think the GT is powerful enough to run games @1920x1200 with all the eye candy on. COD4 for example runs not as smooth as I would like. I have recently just upgraded my monitor coming from a 1280x1024 res and the GT was fine at that res. 1920x1200 seems to be pusing it to the limits I think, perhaps its because it only has 512mb of vram?

Im hoping to upgrade when something better is launched from Nvidia . . .

I ordered my stuff yesterday for a build and decided on the GTX as i'm gonna be running at 1900x1200, but for 1600x1050 a GT would probably suit your needs best (as long as you dont push crysis too hard)

Thx for the input chaps. My Nec won't go above 1680 x 1050 anyways and I suppose I could always get another GT at some point and go SLI...

Any brand in particular ? and whats with the 1028mb version i've just discovered.

Easily. 1440x900 on high. No AA but you don't really need it. I get 25-40fps.

To OP: Asus have just released a 1Gb 8800GT I think. I read a review on it but I found the fact that there's no cooling for the RAM a little worrying...
You wouldn't really reap any great benefits from a 1Gb card anyway unless you were actually gaming at big resolutions (ie. greater than 1680x1050, which you've already said your monitor won't do)
I'd recommend the Leadtek 8800GT - purely on the basis that I've had it a couple of months and it's been solid as a rock. Decent cooling too. Although some others may have more informed recommendations.

Cheers.

Whack a thermalright GT cooler or a artic cooling aftermarket one on an 8800gt and you're sorted, the only issue with it is temps, and as both these coolers can be run passively you'll get a quieter and cooler result.
