Some real weird stuff been happening with my computer recently and i'm not sure if they are all connected or if its all seperate incidents and im just unlucky. Was wondering if anyone here may be able to shed some light on any of them.

So about a week ago my computer wouldnt boot and i had to have a poke about inside, taking some bits out and back in and and finally reinstalling windows. Everything seemed ok after that, well for a little while.

So a few days later i bought myself a new hdd and went to install it. Now my motherboard has 6 sata ports and four are in use, but nothing will work when i plug them into the bottom two. Ive swapped things round and doesnt matter the cable or device, anything in the bottom two wont work. Though why would two specific ports not work?

Next my keyboard wouldnt work the other day, so i plugged it into a different usb in the back and it says something about an error installing drivers and still doesnt work. I tried other things like my camera into the same usb sockets and they work fine. Now the weird thing is that if i plug the keyboard into the front usb sockets it works fine every time. I plugged it back into a rear one the other day and it worked. Come in tonight and its not working again, but still works in the front one....

Last issue is that my dvd drive seems to be acting weird. Ive never had any issues with it since it was built. Now out of the blue im burning stuff and 1/3 of the discs dont even burn, they get errors. The ones that do burn i bring downstairs and they dont work. Some will work after being put in for the tenth time or something daft, but some just refuse point blank to work on my dvd player. The same discs though work fine on the computer.

Like i say i dont know if this is all linked or its just damn bad luck. Anyone got any ideas or heard of anything like these problems before.

I would suggest one of the following

1 - Your PSU is failing, or underpowered.
2 - Your processor is overheating (Have you used a temp checking utility)
3 - Your motherboard is failing (possibly on board power supply components)

Oh yes - have you done any overclocking - if so, remove it.

2 is easiest to check - download coretemp
1 is easy to check if you have or can borrow a spare PSU. You can also use an online calculator to check if your PSU has enough guts.
3 - most difficult - check out 1 and 2 first (and disable any overclocking)

Edit: another thing to try - a memory stress test.

Cheers for the help, I'll go through the steps you mention but just a little more info in case it helps. I dont think it'll be the power supply is underwpowered as its fairly hefty, 1200W.

I really hope it aint the motherboard as it cost me a small fortune but i'll go through the tests and see what i get.

I think the person who talked me through building the computer told me to overclock it, but im sure i took it off not long after.

Ok heres the first test for the temp. Do they look ok or do they show overheating?

I've no idea what the norm is i'm afraid.

Nope not tried dusting it though it it probably could do with it, would just need to read up on exactly how to do it though.

This is the spec:

• Intel Skulltrail, i5400 Express 771x2 PCI-E (x16) DDR2 ECC/Non-ECC 800MHz, SATA II, SATA RAID, E-ATX
• 8 gig ram
• 2 x Intel Xeon Quad E5420 @ 2.5GHz
• 2 x Zalman CNPS9500A-LED CPU Cooler
• Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
• 3 x Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA-II 32MB Cache
• Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter
• Lian Li PC-A71B Aluminium Tower Case - Black
• Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music 7.1 Sound Card
• Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-Bit

Thanks

If it is the motherboard i take it my options are fairly limited. I'm guessing my only hope is that i can claim something through my insurance...

A couple of things that puzzle me though is the fact that although the keyboard doeesnt want to work in the back ports, all other devices do. If it was the mb, wouldnt no device work?

Another one is the dvd issue, i mean although the discs no longer seem to work on my downstairs dvd player, they work fine every time if used in the computer. Isnt that weird?

Though it could well be both these issues would happen in such a case like if the mb is failing, I just didnt realise it.
