General Darts Thread

Wow. Henry Coates a 20 year old won the Players Championship. He doesn't even have a tour card, beat Heta in a quality final. He played really well all day, many 100+ averages and 104 in the final.
As a follow up, he won two games the next day with 107-109 averages, but then lost in the third match of PC26. That PC25 win will ensure he'll be in one or two of the majors coming up now later in the year. One to watch maybe. Almost certain Littler will know of him.

The thing is, LL is the best player in the world so it is expected that the highest averages would be against him even if the opponents are not playing any better than they do against other players. I would've been staggered if he wasn't top of that list just based on logic.

I think what's often overlooked by fans, and maybe even some pundits is that basically averages will be higher if you don't get to to finish, because it means you aren't deliberately trying to score less with your darts. So if LL is checking out in 12 darts or less than you will get max 9 or 12 darts yourself. So a much higher proportion of darts thrown against LL will be "darts for scoring" rather than "darts for double". You can't have your average dragged down by a stinker of a 20 dart leg or whatever, if you never actually get to throw 20 darts.

It's one reason why when players move from the BDO (or women's) to the men's PDC, people are like "lol, look at this clown with a 94 average, he's going to get battered in the PDC". But then they actually average higher in the PDC than they did in the BDO because they are against better opponents. Glen Durrant, Stephen Bunting these sort of players. If your opponent is throwing a 78 average it's much less likely you will average 100+ because your bad legs don't end early like they do vs good players.

Probably the best darts match i've seen was that semifinal about 10 years ago between MvG and Barney, 114 vs 109 averages over a long match. When you have two top players both playing well, you will get monster averages.

I suspect if you looked at first9 dart average instead, that table would look a lot closer.
