bit boring in parts i thought... with not very much going on at all, intersected by firefights where not many ppl got slugged
(one particularly pertinent example was in one of the middling episodes where they ran through a town in humvees and got shot at but never really seemed to do much damage, nor take any back...
just seemed a bit soft to me.

That would be episode 2 which I just watched. From what I understand, this is made by the same team that brought us The Wire. TW was heavily character based and this is the same, that's the draw for me, it's more about the marines than the actual action.

Have just finished watching this and it's an excellent series, almost on a par with Band Of Brothers for me, have a few questions though if anyone knows a little more about it.
How much is based on fact, I know it's based upon a book but how much of what's in the series actually happened?
Were the recon marines that went into iraq really so under equipped and told to "make do"

This is what i thought...but then they'd say things like "we're oscar mike in 5 mikes"...it'd get a little confusing.

Pretty closely based on the actual reports of the 'Rolling Stone' reporter iirc.
I guess that's how he saw it or it was portrayed to him by the men. It's not just our armed services who have issues with kit.
Oscar Mike = OM = on the move. Gets confusing though when Mike(m) is used for minutes and milimeters, as in "40 mike-mike" grenades. It's all in the context.
I thought that the first few episodes were great, but the last few were kind of an anti-climax, but since it's based on non-fiction I guess that can't be helped.
The main problem I thought was with their helmets on, a lot of the marines looked very similar (especially when their facial hair gets removed). There were two officers in particular who I always got confused who was who, one was Nate's Captain I think (not Captain America).

Nate's captain was Encino Man I think, who did look very simlar to one of the others (Patterson?)
Was that the one officer who called a "danger close" fire mission and nate questioned him? Did you think he looked similar to the guy who took a swing at him during the football game in the last episode?
Brilliant series. For fans of the series I'd really recommend Nate Fick's book 'One Bullet Away' if you want a bit more detail on what went on. For a good read on the Iraq war in general I'd recommend Thomas Ricks' books 'Fiasco' (up to late 2006) and 'The Gamble' (end of 2006 to now)
