The guy who called in the "danger close" fire mission was the Bravo Company commander "Encino Man" (Nate's Captain), who got punched by the Alpha Company commander in the football game. They did look quite similar and in some shots "Captain America" looked similar to them as well. Was most confusing the first time I watched the series

I thought encino man was captain america
not from shots when they're together but from the talk between the men.
I think it's heavily based on the experiences and real characters in his book but I'm guess the screenwriters added enough of their own stuff.

lol, pats rambo trilogy (yes i do own it bcause it was a cheapo from asda but nm)...
but really, i also own, Band of Brothers boxed set, thats far better and still gives character stuff in the show?
i watched all the genkill episodes but my interest did wane during most of them, waiting for the next engagement etc...
tbh i probably prefered ross kemp in afganistan!

He is the heavily muscled guy, all into his training and healthy living etc...
The Charms thing is explained a bit more in the book; it's basically just a marine superstition thing that as Charm sweets are designed to be 'lucky charms', they will actually do the opposite and just bring bad luck, so they just throw them away if they get them in their MRE.
Anyone found eating them will get a lot of abuse.

Great book too, i suggest reading it.
I read the book before they made the series. The series is pretty true to the book. For those people saying parts were slow, well, thats kind of how it happened. They didn't Hollywood it up and i'm thankful for it.

Best thing about the series tbh, it felt authentic and real throughout and you really got a chance to know the characters inside and out.
My only beef with the TV show compared to the book is the whole point of the title 'Generation Kill'. The idea being half the troops have grown up with violence either simulated in games or movies or actual violence, and almost look forward to it. I just don't think that came across in the TV show.

Compared to the us army, the marine corp's are badly supplied/equipped. Many books ive read, or documentarys ive seen, going back even as far as ww2. The marines have always had to make do with inferior equipment, in the pacific in ww2, many marine units were still using bolt action springfield rifles while the semi automatic m1 garand was standard issue in army units.
Not only that, but one thing that imo doesn't really come across in the series is how little training/preparation the recon marines had for the role they were asked to perform in Iraq. For example Cpl Person, who drove the lead vehicle, hadn't actually passed the necessary tests to drive humvees - none of them had. In the book it explains how they got these knackered old vehicles (army rejects I think) delivered to their base in the US a few days before they shipped out. All the marines had a go at driving them, and the best ones got the jobs as drivers.
The role of a recon marine apparently does not usually involve riding in convoy, springing ambushes and engaging the enemy. However before the invasion of Iraq the top brass decided that this was how they were to going to be deployed. This is all alluded to in the series but the book really spells it out - it should be an absolute scandal for the USMC that they sent in troops with inadequate training and preparation.
It definitely was a strange decision to employ recon marines in the convoy role, theese guys are reconnaisance specialists, trained in close target observation, surveillance and intelligence gathering. Its like entering a racehorse into a donkey derby.
