Hey guys. Forgive me for the lack of questionning for myself in this as I was asleep when they called so I wasn't exactly at my sharpest.

Had a call just a few minutes ago from a bird claiming to work for Alliance and Leicester's security. She said that there had been a number of transactions made in the llast few minutes that they have blocked and wanted to check if they were made by me. There was a £1 donation to Oxfam and a £30 O2 topup.

I confirmed that I did not make these transactions and she said that she was cancelling my card and would send out a new one. She asked me to confirm the month of my DOB and read out my address and asked me to confirm it. This is all the information I gave.

Did 1471 to try and get a number to maybe google but the ID was withheld.

Does it sound genuine?

Sounds fine to me. Those type of payments are exactly the things that scammers use to test your card details.

Best give them a ring on their standard number though to check as it should all be logged on your account.

Sounds okay to me, had a similar call not too long ago about a small transaction to Steam and had to verify my date of birth. Perhaps try using the card to see if it's still active or maybe give your bank a call?

I've had this sort of thing before (they've never been right)

I call them back on a number i know is theirs and ask them. Each time they said 'yeah, that was us' - but better safe than sorry.

From someone who used to work in credit card fraud... thats textbook compromised card details. £1 or 1p tester trans then internet/Mailorder trans eg card not present transactions to try and use the card

It never ceases to amaze and amuse me when financial institutions do this. I had RBS/Natwest's credit card services ring me from a geographic (01xxx) number on my mobile recently. I answered and was asked to confirm my name, DOB and address. I refused, and asked who was calling.

They said they were RBS/Natwest credit card services and couldn't talk to me until I confirmed my name, DOB, address and... no word of a lie... my credit card number and expiry. Um, wut? I refused to proceed and rang back via the bank's own number (one I trusted) and it turned out to be a genuine call. I asked the manager why they insist on requesting those details when THEY are cold-calling customers. "Security, sir", apparently.

I asked whether I'd be liable if I gave out my VISA details to a stranger who randomly called me on the phone, who later bought £3,000 of AV equipment, and funnily enough he said I would be held accountable for not protecting my details. The credit card services manager (not agent, manager) really couldn't see the irony in this. Apparently them telling me they're from my CC company makes it OK to trust them? :o

At the end of the day how are they meant to know they're speaking to the correct person.... it works both ways...some people are happy to talk others arent and are advised to call the number on the card asap.

It is ironic but thats how it works. Its your duty to keep the card details safe, luckily your one of the people with a brain who challenge it and call fo their own accord. Suprising how many just go through with it.

Yea. And it is also stupid of them to say that this is okay and to just trust the random person calling seeing as the scammers know this.. :/
