Genuine Screen protectors

Still don't see the point of screen protectors. All modern smartphones have glass screens - anything sharp enough to scratch that is going to go through a screen protector like a hot knife through butter, surely?

invisible shields are actually quite good for that. on the other hand, i'd rather a screen protector take the hit than the screen itself

What phone do you have? As Vertigo1 says, most (new) phones have scratch/damage resistant glass, like Gorilla Glass, so screen protectors aren't really worth it if its a high end phone.

Not necessarily. Gorilla Glass is designed to withstand impact but not scratching - as a number of people have found to their cost. Screen protectors are made of a stretchy plastic that will snag and deflect points and edges, which averts scratching.

Take the SGS2, they scratch easy. In fact the newer phones with oleophobic coatings seems to scratch much easier than the older phones. I'd always get a quality screen protector. Even my IPad 2, treated with kid gloves has developed micro-scratches in the oleophobic coating. No idea how they got there, I guess the top coating just isn't that tough.

They really don't scratch that easily, I've had loads of smartphones (and iPad 1/2 since release) and I've never scratched a screen to this day.

I know they are far from scratch proof, but it certainly takes something extremely hard (more than a generic bit of grit) and a lot of force to get them to scratch.

That or I'm just incredibly lucky. People argue about screens and build quality and all of that stuff, but as soon as you put a screen protector on a lot of that goes away. Even the best ones aren't good enough.

I'd use one if I thought my phone would be at risk of being scratched though, but it seems people have them in cases AND have screen protectors on, which is just bizarre.

Its an Xperia Mini, it came with one in the box so surely its required and surely it can be replaced?

This makes it even less worth buying one.

So have I. Mine was in a nice case, clean pockets. No grit (which can be many times harder than Corning glass), nothing, still scratched. Tiny, but there and obvious from some angles in the right light that it's in the surface coating, all within days. So I disagree. I'm seriously anal about my IPAD's, there's no way anything remotely hard came in contact with it and I'll bet if you really look you'll see micro-scratches in the coating. Maybe its what I describe as a scratch, I'm not talking about something that effects the viewing or even generally visible with the screen on. Still, I'm not the only one to notice the marks. Maybe you are just lucky. Annoys me though, I'm sure the anti-grease coatings are the cause. I've passed on my older phones to relatives, my wife's dad is anything but careful and not a mark.

Martin fields are slick, zagg is more like orange peel, cheap ebays can range from clingfilm to pretty strong stuff. Zagg's quite often can be got on the cheap with offer codes direct from them.

I never used a screen protector before but I've just got a tiny little scratch on my SGS2 so I've bought one of those Martin Fields protectors
