Geohot and Fail0verflow are getting sued

you mis understand his point.

You wont be able to go on-line and play multiplayer using copied games.

They wont be retrospectively able to stop the console running the code, but they will be able to retrospectively introduce something that can tell you're using a burned DVD rather than the genuine disc when you go on-line.

Thus its likely any games you do pirate will play, but you won't be able to use the multiplayer aspect of them.

Which kind of defeats the point of having the game on something like COD.

This part is in every BD player and is part of the actual hardware of the drive, nowt to do with the PS3, i guess it could be spoofed but at present it already happens.

at the moment we're merely speculating how sony can detect if you're running copied games or not.

They'll find a way of detecting it, even if they can't retrospectively stop the machine running the game.

you guys dont seem to get it, games are not being run from blu ray, they never have been, never will be, they are running on external and internal hard drive, some games are being run on psn this very moment, on custom firmware, straight off the internal

and his original point was that nobody would get a ps3 modded because they wouldnt want to play any offline games, so i did get it entirely MrLOL

From what I read, He was saying that why would you buy the console and mod it and not beable to play online games online. He's saying you'd be limited to offline gaming. Which I agree with. Just because its doable now doesnt mean it will always be so.

CFW will be detectable, All sony have to do is update the official firmware with a key that is better encrypted, or give the firmware a proper checksum. If it connects online, this will be noticeable. Hense the consoles will be stuck as an offline console. Which was his point.

Also, if games arent being run from blurays as intended, and they're being dumped on the drive, are you sure that doesnt give off telltail signs? Microsofts is able to detect when software is being used to virtualise copy protection. Surely its easy to integrate something into the OFW capable of spotting that something is being ran from the internal drive, The game or the ISOloader of sorts.

Also, I have noticed this seems to be moving away from homebrew talk. And more blatant talking of the ability to play pirate games

Of course it can be done now, but Sony will fight back.

They won't be able to stop the console running signed code for custom media centres etc.. which is what a lot of people buying a PS3 purely to hack it will want.

Those buying it purely to play pirated games will have to keep it off the internet so Sony can't remotely go detecting things. The war has only just begun.

microsoft have ways to detect firmware change, and every time they update the dash a new firmware is released to get round it, and you think sony can do it different? I dont think so

I'd happily settle for the dribs and drabs that miss the boat and get blacklisted.

User installs CFW
Sony update OFW
User connects with old CFW as the user isnt aware of the update
Sony notices CFW
User black listed

£300 console now works offline only.

And you think you can leave a Jtag xbox permanently connected to the net without fear of it being perma banned from Live ? Give me a break.

Why does it matter to you?

I dislike piracy. Which is what this will mainly be used for. I pay full price for my stuff, Why the hell should people get stuff for free just because they're happy to disregard any so called ethics.

It could also be down to my vindictive personality. It matters in the same way it matters to see people faceplant on contestant based television shows.

Or off course the CFW can be designed to send no data to Sony at all and even remove PSN from the options, they could probably even create a custom online peer to peer as was done on the original xbox, meaning PSN can be forgotten about, and maybe homebrew PSN would be better anyway LOL

To the people claiming that the PS3's sole purpose is games, who the **** are you to tell somebody that? I could buy a car, put a great speaker system in it and never drive it once and only listen to my sound system. I decide what to do with the stuff I buy. - What is a PC's sole purpose? Oh it's user definable.

For the record I don't even own a PS3. Also the people who blame the hackers for getting the hacks up on online games, why not blame Sony? Sony are the ones raking the money in for their goods so surely they can afford to fix it. OH WAIT, they skimped out on security and can now pretty much just watch their system get hacked, not the hackers. I don't even reckon Sony will lose out too much money on this either. Look how *badly* the Wii has done after being hacked from very early on..

whats jtag xbox got to do with it, which can be unbanned anyway, if you dont sign into psn how are you going to get flagged? Maybe read up on this?

The car analogy has nothing to do with this at all, its totally different and isnt comparable at all. You dont sign a TOS which tells you that you cant fit a new stereo or new wheels etc to your car. If its a new car you sign an agreement that if you dont keep up with the service history the warranty isnt valid.
The purpose of the PS3 and what you do with the hadware is not in question, the firmware belongs to Sony and as part of the ToSs you agree not to mess around with it. So you are trying to say that because Sony made the PS3 its their fault it got hacked not the actual people hacking it?

We're all in agreement that you will be fine playing a modded PS3 offline....

You dont have to sign into PSN a valid internet connection is all thats required for Sony to find if your console has been running homebrew, as its logged internally and is sent to PSN even if you dont actually sign into the service.

The fact that Sony made it badly, is the reason it is being/has been compromised. Any excuses for using the same random number other than laziness or short-sightedness?

What is the purpose of the PS3? If it's features such as media organization can be improved then why shouldn't they be improved? Sony won't do it so somebody else will.

The point is that you agree not to do this with the ToS, so you are breaking the terms that you agreed with. It doesnt matter if someone does something better and makes awesome CFW its still not legal as it breaks terms you have agreed to.

I never got asked to agree to any TOS when I bought my PS3  there was no TOS I had to accept when I turned it on either.....
